In the original realease article thing they mention an accessory to give you greater camera flexability. I'm thinking this may be an extension lead that goes between your camera and the phone so you can waggle the camera around on a flexible lead. I'd had that idea myself...

Perfect for all you guys that run upskirt photo websites.

And Paul, can you tell me more about the tanager / SPVx you have right now, i.e. has it better shaped headphones, is there a camera for it with the same colours as the tanager (like the cam that comes with the spv), and what colour is it? i've seen pics with a kind of purple cover and onde with a silver cover, like the one at the infosync site. And what's the tanager / SPVx weight?

Headphones are the same.

Camera is the same (and looks fine, the silver on the Tanager is the same shade).

Weight? Haven't weighed 'em...

The keypad and display may have been improved, but I don't really like the look of it, especially that LED.

SPV looks better. :)

I am not gonna be rushing out to swap mine.

I just want the new ROM update now.

Roll on the 24th Update day ;)

"In spite of Paul suggesting several times that the screen is the same size, if you check the picture with a ruler held up against your monitor you'll find that the screen is exactly the same size.

I think what we have here is an optical illusion where the external shape of the phone is confusing your brain into thinking that the screens are different sizes when in fact they are EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE. "

Reminds me of a Father Ted episode, where he's explaining to Fr. Dougal that the "little" cows aren't really smaller... just further away. A cursory examination of the pic shows that the SPVx is... slightly further away. Ergo, if the dimensions of the screen measure the same, due to perspective they are in fact bigger. There was also a cigarette advertising poster campaign which showed that a cigarette held close to your eyes looks bigger than a double-decker bus....

So what do the buttons and joypad feel like? I hope the joypad isn't as sensitive as the t68 or it would be a right nightmare accidentally loading software...

It _is_ a Tanager. I don't know why they don't just call the Tanagerx.

Because it' is a TANAGER and Orange like to call things by their own

made up names  The best example is the old 61xx series, Orange

called theirs the 702. It's jusy a way of marketing.

PAul, any news on whether there will be a free upgarde for existing SPV users? I would go the the SPVx simply for the better screen.

Posted

Extremely unlikely that it will be free.

I do believe that Paul was enquiring about us receiving the phone at preferential rates - giving out 40,000 new handsets, which otherwise cost £180 on new tariffs may not be the best idea, especially when they've got another 160,000 on order.

As mentioned in another thread, I have asked my contact in the Orange Media Centre for an official response as to whether we will be able to upgrade at a preferential price - I hope to receive a response Monday... but you know what O are like :)

Fair enough, I'll wait and see if you have any luck with 'O'

Another thing I forgot to mention about the Tanager, is altho the cradle is very similar, they are a slightly different shape to hold the phone, and so aren't interchangeable.

How annoying!

Screen sz ident. as Paul states. Don't be fooled by the "design" lines that go to the s'ware keys on the SPV. The space used to write "SPV" has now been used to help space the keys more sensibly.

I let Orange cust serv's know in no uncertain terms last Nov, &, insisted it was fedback that both the keypad config and quality are terrible. The lottery sel/dir key, and the end call key have been a particular source of missery. i.e. - a 1hr 20 min call to Casio UK's answering machine out of office hours because the call wasn't ended by the keypress. A not uncommon event.

Q. - for Paul are the ext. dim's the same or is Tanager longer?

Is Firaas employed or in any way dependant on Orange?

O's man/mole on site. Or just no standards as in very easily fooled.

Keypad quality is fine. Buttons can be awkward sometimes.

You don't work for Vodafone or T-Mobile do you ?

HoneyPanther.....seeing as all your posts on here have been nothing more than negative comments, why don't you get yourself a different phone, thay is if you do actually own an SPV ?

Ditto :)

Tanager is same width, VERY slightly taller, and noticeably thinner.

"]I would have expected a bit more interest from them to be honest with you. MS at least appreciate how this community helps their products, and appreciates we are their valued customers!

I don't honestly think O could give a s**t.

This is REALLY a shame. OK I appreciate that MS appreciate, but what the hell is wrong with Orange? I heard from someone here that they are in fairly close contact with O Tech Team and those guys don't have a clue (compared to us that is I guess).. Surely it would bring them so much more money if they took things on this forum in consideration and ACTED on it.. I mean most of the bugs/wishlist is very possible and for professionals actually developing SPV (hard/soft) it can NOT be that hard to implement even given current hone limitations.

I am led to beleive that firstly O do not feedback to developers as they should and maybe even *blocking* information flow on SPV in favour of Tanager and _future models in development_. That is to differentiate new products more by limiting development on older models. So maybe all the features we want will be in a model that only comes out when there is real threat of competition. UK market is very fierce, but O being a world provider and almost a monopoly (in a sense) don't give a s***.

This just makes me feel sad for them. Pure ignorance! Having just Paul as a partner(ish) would make so much difference for them! They could badword fire the rest of the team! Full of hatred for them really..

Wonder what MS thinks about Paul turning traitor with the Modaco P800 site ;-)

Is the sreen on the tanager covered by something more substantial than flimsy easy scratch plastic?

Dont get me wrong love my SPV, but if after 2.5 months its this scratched will i be able to see the screen at the end of my contract?

Hope cheap upgrade is available because after all it is not the tanager that is bad, it is the fact we were done by orange.

neilfenstein try out the touch screen protectors.

All you have to do is cut them to size.

On pinball machines playfield something called Mylar is used, it's fully transparent and virtually indestructable, the drawback is that when it stick it wont come off again

but it should be able to protect your screen forever
