FreedomPop, the originally US based 'free' mobile provider, has now launched in the UK after announcing it's intentions to come to market earlier in the year. With an offering starting at £0 with numerous (rather pricey) addons available, the Three MVNO is handing users 200 mins, text and MB per month completely free (once you pay £5 activation and a £1.99 delivery charge for the nano or Micro SIM).

So how will FreedomPop make their money? Well, aside from encouraging users to sign up for a higher tier of service and charging for usage over and above the free allowance, they also have 'offers' you can complete to earn extra data (such as starting product trials, completing surveys etc.). Additional allowance can also be gained by referring friends.

Paid options include...

  • A premium 1GB tier with 1GB data / 1000 mins / 1000 texts and HD voice for £8.99/month (free trial currently available)
  • A premium 2GB tier with 2GB data / unlimited mins / unlimited texts for and HD voice for £11.99/month
  • Data rollover for £1.49/month
  • Premium voice if not included with plan for £1.99/month
  • Visual voicemail for 99p/month
  • Usage alerts for 99p/month
  • 100 global minutes for 99p/month
  • 300 global minutes for £1.99/month
  • 1000 global minutes for £4.99/month
  • Virtual numbers in other countries from £1.99/month
  • Country specific voice plans (price varies)

As you can see, for a very basic service it's free / cheap, but the cost can ramp up fast when you start bolting things on, so careful calculation is needed to see if FreedomPop is really for you.

We've ordered a SIM to see what the service is like... are you tempted to do the same? Let us know!

Visit the FreedomPop UK website to get started.

(h/t CoolSmartphone for spotting the service being publicly available!)
