If you want to install custom Roms you'll need to unlock your bootloader, and to do that youll need to apply for permission. You need to register with Xiaomi for a MI account and request unlock. Mine took about 4 days to arrive. Register on your phone so all the details aren't transposed whilst doing it from a laptop

Youll then need to dload the MILLET tool to unlock your bootloader. Its a simple process from the tutorial, but there are some issues with the process:

1. COULDNT VERIFY DEVICE

Once you've held the VOL (DOWN) and POWER button your unit will enter fastboot mode, when you plug it into the laptop and start the MILLET tool, I'm getting the message "Couldn't Verify Device".

The MI forums suggest that this is due to the phone not having the correct ROM installed. The Millet tool seems only to be able to unlock the bootloader of devices using the GLOBAL DEVELOPER ROM.

Now youll be stuck in Fastboot mode on the unit. You cant pull the the battery as its non removable.

A quick google reveals that if you hold the POWER button for 20-25 seconds the phone will reboot.

2. GLOBAL DEVELOPER ROM

Ok, so we cant unlock the bootloader as we're running a ROM that isn't supported by the MILLET tool, so were gonna have to switch ROMS.

To do this we have to use the UPDATER app on the phone.

First we'll have to download the correct Miui ROM located here

Transfer it to your phone or download it directly to your phone.

Now Open the UPDATER app on your phone. Click on the  dots (...) in the top right corner and select the rom you've downloaded. Once selected you should be able to flash the Developer ROM.

Or so we thought... My phone gives me the message "could not verify update"....

so when ive got over that hurdle ill update y'all.

My experience of BL unlocking...

  1. I never received SMS confirmation of permission - in fact in general SMS messages from Xiaomi seem to be very hit and miss and I only ever received about half of them (e.g. confirmation codes for verifying accounts etc.). I just happened to try a few days after applying for permission and it worked.
  2. In spite of some people saying that BL unlocking should work on any ROM for me it only worked on China Developer. My phone came from Gearbest with some vendor ROM (identifiable by an unusual version number) so I flashed Global Stable using this thread: http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html. I could not unlock on that so I flashed China Developer using the same approach, unlocked the BL and then went back to Global Stable. There are some limitations on which ROMs you can switch between using the updater app as far as I know. You may be on a vendor ROM right now (what's the version number?) so using the thread above is probably a better bet.

Hope this helps.

just had a look at the link and I don't get my phone listed in the device manager as ADB or MDB interfaces. I'm on WIn10

That thread is really superseded by this one:

http://en.miui.com/thread-296053-1-1.html

Once you have an unlocked BL use option #4 and avoid methods that required a cooked boot.img as it's too much hassle.

feds64 posts some really good stuff including this tutorial on BL unlocking which is the one that I followed:

ive been doing a lot of googling and I may have a driver problem, it may be inconsequential, but the tutorial requires the android device listed in the device manger. I don't for some reason. I have downloaded the xiaomi drivers, but I'm not sure how to install them. I also can get the phone listed via the cmd prompt adb is not recognised as in internal command...google says I need to install the android sdk?

any ideas?

No unfortunately, I've switched to a win 7 laptop with adb installed so the drivers are now installed. I've read through the list link you sent but I can't seem to turn off the driver signing? So can't progress through that route.

I've also tried downloading the China Dev ROM to the phone and flashing via the updater tool. No joy. I've tried logging into the millet software with my Mi ID, and my phone number, still no joy.

The trouble is I only have a limited amount of computer knowledge so I'm hamstrung.

I'll try again ovee the weekend when I have more time.

I'm skim reading what seems like hundreds of threads rhen I lose myself and can't remember if I've read em

Some Progress...

Ived downloaded the Mi Phone Suite, which seems to have updated the drivers on my Win10 machine. After about 4-5 tries to connect the phone, it finally managed to connect and I can see the desktop on the phone...

Ive also installed MI FlashTool and ive udated the QUALCOMM driver, using instructions from : Dhananjay Bhosale YOUTUBE channel.

Ive just gotta find and download the china Dev Rom and flash it that way.

is there a special FASTBOOT version of the roms or is that just the method of flashing...via fastboot.

Yes - it's all covered in the link that I posted above which you need to read!

http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html

That thread links to this page which has the fastboot ROMs:

http://en.miui.com/a-234.html

That thread explains exactly how to flash ROMs in this way.

OK thanks. I'll try it tonight. Do I need the redmi note 3 global development ROM as there doesn't seem to be a redmi 3 global development ROM in the page listed. The redmi 3 ones are listed last.

As I said before BL unlocking only worked for me on China Developer ROM.

There's another flashing guide here from feds64 which may be more up to date than the one that I linked to above:

http://en.miui.com/thread-294318-1-1.html

However I haven't used this one yet.

I do plan to go back to a pristine stock ROM install including stock recovery and no root before running the TWRP/root script again and use option #4 this time to avoid the need for a hacked boot.img:

ok Ive flashed the above rom, my usb debugging want activated so I couldn't connect the phone listed as an adb device.

I'm a bit worried now as ive rebooted the phone and ive got the bootlogo...phew, its just come back to life....I was crapping myself there. Lol

ill keep you posted

Glad you got it sorted.

I'm surprised that it was so difficult as it worked fairly easily for me.

If you want to install TWRP now then use this guide and choose option #4.

http://en.miui.com/thread-296053-1-1.html

What ROM are you going to use?

Personally I'm happy enough with stock MIUI - haven't tried the latest MIUI 7 yet never mind MIUI 8 (beta?).

I think I'm running miui 8, although I'm not a miui fan. its slick and well laid out, but just not the way I like stock android. I think I saw a CM12 rom somewhere.

Now ive installed a fastboot rom is there a different method of flashing roms.
