At the moment:

ActiveSync stays grey.

LED does nowt.

Put phone in, familiar noise comes up, along with the little dialog box in the bottom-right along the lines of USB device attached... may not work, etc... blah blah.

I need to keep redoing this do I? I don't recall ever getting a dialog box about Microsoft USB device in the past when I've used ActiveSync, but is that what I'm after, right?

are you rebootin everytime beacuse you must everytime...

I got exactly the same thing as you got the first time... USB device not reconised etc then i rebooted after 2 times then did it again and it found a diffo device just keep trying :)

Its doing my head in..

Waiting a minute or two for the Orange Update program to 'check the information on my SPV', before the familiar dialog box pops up - Communication Error.

Ok guys i know whats wrong got it sused! I have just done a hard reset on my phone and retried the procedure and fooked it up on purpose so im back to where i was....

Okay!

If the phone hangs when you turn it on with the canary red green blue bar boot screen this is what you have to do:

Unplug the Phone from the cradle and remove battery..

Reboot PC and wait for it to come back to dektop

NOW!

Remove the SD Card from the phone and put the battery back in and turn on the phone (theres no rush because i did this like 15 times and it werked everytime!)

Put the phone into the cradle, check that the bottom left hand part of the phone where it says Serial changes to USB, and wait for an error message in windows about unrecognised device etc (if you dont get one an error or if you do please you must do the following)

Go to device manager and look at the bottom for CE Usb devices> Expand it and look for Microsoft USB Sync Device and right click and click remove or uninstall.

Now unplug the phone from the cradle and remove the battery

Put battery back in

Turn on

And place the Phone in the cradle when it says:

Press the Action key to load boot loader or any other key to continue and just wait...

Windows should detect the device and Find a Microsoft USB Synch Device and it should then be ok and no error should pop up

Re run the Update program Pressing Yes to All when it asks to overwrite the files..

Click Next and wait a while

Active Sych will stay grey (if you hover over it when update is running it will dissapear beacuse the update closes active synch just like the Compaq Ipaq rom updates do) The light on the front will not light up because it does not have any os to control it so...

Just wait and it will detect the phone and the phone screen will go white and it will continue onto the next stage

Happy Phoning

:)

just so you guys know, i had the same problem, was stuck in the three colour canary screen, i didnt remove the battery or nothin, didnt need to reboot the comp, all i did was leave the phone in the cradle and hold down the power button until the phone reboots (dont quit the installer, leave the screen open), and the installer just started working again when it got to the three colour canary screen.

As far as anyone knows, are we expecting the new ME version to also fix the problem with the GDI.exe thingee on Win98 machines as well - if not what are we supposed to do?

Cheers

I,M CALM ???? I,M CALM ??? 8) crimminsky but just got to let some1 know of this F**k up that Orange as created. because as we all know those B*****ds at O are in this forum even as i,m writing spying on whats being said about the update. Well read this you bunch of T****ers having dealt with your services b4 and swore that i would never never again use your network. Starting at 9.00 o,clock in the morning i,m gonna be standing outside my nearest O shop telling every person going in that as a network server they be better off with a whined up phone or 1 powered by an elastic band cause it would,nt be as much trouble as the service the,yd get from Orange   B*****ds

hi mono, all - still having the problem? just been sweating it for an hour with the damn thing same prob - I am on XP SP1 too coincidentally. Didnt want to load the forums as I am on GPRS (other device) and it is a bit painful, but glad I did now.

Will give the advise a go an report back (assuming I can get a connection back up). Fingers Crossed.......

I've tried every suggestion on this site, i didnt back up but even if i had the bootloader ~has~ been flashed so i wouldn't be able to restore it.

I'm give it another few tries but then i'll moan at Orange....

Mono,

I was just about to pack it in out of frustration, I followed WeZ01y's instructions and had left the thing sat on Canary screen for 25 mins.

Was about to have another go at deleting CE Sync in device manager and pulled out the battery (leaving USB in still) and it seemed to fire the thing into life, currently sat updating, correction, now finished.

No idea why pulling out the battery (with the USB power still on) did anything, but it worked.

Phone has had time to reboot whilst I have been doing this and is correctly updated.

Good luck to anyone still having problems, seems to be very hit and miss for something as crucial as a complete reflash.

right - thanks for your help guys BUT

has anyone got a rough estimate of how long it should stay on the canary screen when you have rerun the update (and rebooted etc etc etc)?

thanks in advanc

Now having another go at the update - this time it has gone straight through, paused for about 40 secs on the canary screen and then went straight to erase and then reflash.

No idea what is different, everything was the same bar a few contacts, sounds etc when i tried it originally.
