Help needed with encoding divx files for pocketMVP

I had some success with the MPEG files encoded to DIVX (Pocket MVP) on friday. (24FPS - frames per second - yes full 24fps playback allbeit for 2min or so of entire video...)

Please note I think Virtual Dub has its uses (the filters feature is brilliant!) but it is no match for simplicity and effectiveness of Flask MPEG v6 (see if you can find it - when I do I'll post a link)

1 - Make sure video is in MPEG format (m2v and vobs were jumpy - dont know why)

2 - Use DIVx codex 5.02

3 - Use these settings - (Flask) 176x208, 24fps, set file name etc, (DIVx Codec) 45kbs and keep other default settings, (MP3 Codec) 16kbs 11025

For some reason you may be prompted to enter these settings twice (could be a flask program bug)

Also please note, these settings are not flawless but they provide very very smooth video playback for the first 2mins or so and then the playback becomes jumpy.

I am still looking into why this happens and feel that the pocket mvp software may be at fault, but as I am not a software engineer I could be wrong, however I am still trying to tweak the settings.

Hope this helps!

I have tried and tried to get it to run at a sustained 2XFps but alas it won't cope! (think it's a bandwidth problem my self);)

[edit] Just had an idea, maybe it can be done!! All this research is starting to pay off!! [/edit]

I have 4 avi files .. i try to load them all, but only 1 of them works (i get "couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MPG4'" on the others) - any suggestions?

ive given up and are using vurtualdub - which has worked 100% of the time for decompressing and then use pocket mvp for veiwing them

as for using flask mpeg - xmpeg is the better program to use

have you tried using windows media 7 encoder for avi's

ive only tried converting mpg's with virtual dub and they have all worked but only got 1 avi to work with wm7 encoder

'Sigh' ;)

Looks like no-one here knows what the hell is going on. I have used DivX 5.0.3 (Pro) with ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER for my SPV. Get that? NO PROBLEMS. Some people claim thats impossible, others claim it can't be done. I can and I have (If only I could prove it...)

However, whats evidentally needed is a FULL explanation of how to do this. I didn't want to but I am now going to have to get home and write an entire feature on how to code for the SPV. I will use DivX 5.0.4 and prove once and for all that DivX 5.0.2 is not the only version that works.

I will also use VirtualDub. I'll try to write it in English and it will probably be way OTT patronising, but it seems nearly everyone needs to be led by the hand. It will also have lots of picture for those who have difficulty with either English or words.

It will also be a MHT file. That saves people moaning that pictures have gone missing or something, but seeing as we all use Windows (ocasionally) that won't be a problem.

'Till tonight,

Well it seems that 5.0.4 will NOT work on SPVs.

I'm gonna have a play with the code, see if I can make it behave but meanwhile heres the FULL instructions for 5.0.3. and a small clip I encoded (Thanks to Pixar)

2 encodes are to make the file better quality.

The error your getting is when you load (or try to load) an AVI which has only been encoded by the first pass. Running the nth or second pass will make a viewable file.

This help?

Its the size of the film trailer you're using. His are encoded to full 176x220. Check that yours is also at that resolution. If it is, press the button which enlarges the image (Check the MVP help), it may stretch it back to normal. Other than that I'm not sure...

You don't want to use letterbox for South Park!

That's what the other setting is for SPVv2. :)

'Sigh'  :(

Looks like no-one here knows what the hell is going on.

Just spotted this!

No-One eh? :? Does that inclued me? :)

The only prob i have had so far (that no one seems to have an anwser for) is on My Matrix Revolutions Trailer with the pink spot prob...

Even worked out that audio error.

At the time no-one knew what the hell was going on (Or at least in that thread) :)

Also, some people like myself would be much happier if you gave us the settings as well as the VirtualDub files. Some of us are happier doing it the long way round (It helps me know whats going on so I can try new ways of doing it). Any chance of that (Especially with the new version not needing decimate by 3)?

Pink spots are usually to with Direct Draw overlay and not the codec (I know for a fact that Windows uses it). Quite why its appearing on the phone though is another matter, especially as it doesn't, AFAIK, support dynamic overlays. You tried re-encoding from scratch? I mean completely from scratch, original media, re-setting up of settings, new logs etc.

Also, you could try changing the bit rate slightly, thats helped on some DVD encodes (And having done 200+ I should know whats happening )

It could also be a glitch in the original. Some players have ways of avoiding bad blocks (By doing guesswork based on motion), but when you encode, its thinking the bad blocks are really there and so encodes it as a pink bit.

Well, thats my possible solutions.

is god on this trust me i know

his settings worked a charm se below

Done and dusted an age back!!!!

Anyway, all valid points that i have thought of the moment i saw my first pink box but........

It ONLY appears on my phone, not my pc, and i have 3 different copys of the clip from 3 different sources and in 2 differnt formats.... they all do it!!!! Weird!!!! :)

That seems to indicate there's a blip in the first, original file, not your encoding.

ok, i think i nearly got it. when u say i need to encode twice that means just do the same vitual dub settings using DivX 5.0.2 encoder twice?

i did it once off some .avi's i got but i got unrecognised Audio and Video formats....

sorry if the guys in the know are getting annoyed by seemingly simple questions, its just that i've never had a phone thats cleverer than me before... :)

Not quite the same setting. On your first pass/encode, you need to set DivX so that its on '2 Pass - 1st Pass' or 'Multipass - 1st Pass' (or similar wording). For the second pass you need to set DivX to '2 Pass - 2nd Pass' or 'Multupass - nth Pass' (or similar).

This should then give you a perfectly viewable file on your PC and phone. If you check the guide I did that may also help as it has pictures of the settings I use.

Don't worry about it. We're all here to learn off each other and it is unusual to have a phone thats seems to know things better than you do. Best thing to do is remember that its only a phone!

@siu99spj Hi i followed your guide in encoding, i was able to encode a 29min clip, but my problem is the file is too big about 350mb, i followed everything your instruction except at audio compression when i click on mpeg layer 3 theres nothing on the right panel its blank, so i just click ok was not able to choose 16KBit/s 16000 HZ Mono. any idea why my avi file is to big 350mb for a 29mins clip? thanks...... got it solve thanks.
