60pounds to unlock fully! At least they mention the newsgroups, but they still lie about the complexity of it.

I've seen loads of these types of ads run in the past. Some on ebay and some eeven in Mobile user mags. I've even seen an ad to 'hack' your DVD player- that's just a con for people who are lazy and can't be bothered to search the internet to learn how to do it themselves.

I think it comes down to this. People will always pay for services. Most of these things they could do themselves and companies make money from it.

Simple.

Here is the auction for you to read

I also pointed out to ebay that this is a blatent lie, since you do not need 'a fair amount of knowledge', you simply follow instructions, and you definitely DO NOT need custom leads.

With regards to copyright, the people who created the method of de-certing, be it one or twenty people, unless they give up the copyright, then they have automatic copyright. The fact that its on the internet does not mean that it has no copyright. You also do not need to declare copyright or use the © symbol, this is only used to let let others know that you are aware of your rights.

P.S. Who owns the copyright to this message, unless MoDaCo states in its rules that any message posted on its forum is its copyright, then I do. The quote is used to show that you are quoting someone else, and as such cannot claim copyright on what that person has said.

As for the backgrounds and wavs posted for ringtones... © someone I'm sure.

I'm not sure if Ebay would pull the auction for alleged copyright infringement, but I bet they'd be very interested by this sellers claim that he's "had 5 enquiries and 3 devices have arrived for unlocking. " - as the auction is for a single item that is still continuing, it is seems lilely that he is selling away from the auction and therefore avoiding Ebay's fees. This is something they take a pretty dim view of and would most likely pull the auction straight away if they felt that this is what he's doing.

I disagree.

What the seller is doing is offering a service. The information on how to unlock/decert is freely available if people look.

Even then people may not have the confidence or technical know-how to attempt the processes involved. It took me a while to take the decert plunge but I'm glad I did.

If people want to pay for someone else to do it, and do it right, it's up to them.

It's called exploiting a gap in the market.

There you go!

That's like putting Al Capone away for Tax Evasion...

Good one, PhilA!

It's called exploiting a gap in the market.

Maybe, but there's explioting and exploiting (ie taking the p*ss)!

It's a sad fact that as soon as anything becomes popular/commercial, some people will always be there to make easy money out of it. I think it's laughable that PC World charge some exhorbitant sum to defrag your hard drive and then call it a "PC health check", but they can get away with it because PC's are no longer just a "techie" thing - 10 years ago a "service" like that wouldn't have made any moeny becuase most people who had a PC accepted that you needed to learn something about it in order to use one. That is no longer the case, and so now novices go to PC World because advertising tells them it's a "good thing". It's the same with many other products, the internet or cars being other good examples; it's perfectly simple to check your oil and tyre pressure but some people are still quite happy to pay someone else to do it.

I don't agree with paying for any so called "service" that you can do quite easily yourself, free or very cheaply, with 10 minutes of research, whether it be to do with a car, computer or an SPV, and if it was me offering these auctions i'd actually feel guilty taking people's money! The problem is however that people don't know about the free way of doing things, and in the case of the SPV phone unlocking is normally a paid for "service", so the first thing they do is go to Ebay and don't bother looking any further. Looking at the e-mail awarner got back from the ebay seller makes me laugh; "Jonathan Davey" is apparently the "director" of a business, but just reading the first line tells me it is far from a serious business communication; perhaps he should have gone to school before starting work

If there's a moral here it's "shop around" - that's what Google is for! :)
