I wish I didn't always have to buy brand new phones when they first come out! Could have saved myself tons of money!

Oh well, I've got my SPV and love so that's ok (at least that's what I keep telling myself).

Trying desperately to resist the urge of getting a P800. I...can...resist!!!!!!

I highly recommend against buying a P800. I have one and to be honest I regret buying it now. At first it seems really good and you start using it and thinking its the best phone on earth, then after a while the novelty wears off and you begin to realise its major downfalls, among them are:

1. Sony Memory Stick Duo - The P800 will only take this form of flash memory, which is double the price of every other form of flash memory on the market, is only suppported on Sony products, and is not widely available in the UK (yet). Put it this way, I can get a 128mb MMC or SD card for HALF THE PRICE of the 64Mb Memory Stick Duo!!!

2. Relies to heavily on the stylus - If you are a looking for a PDA with phone features, and are intending to use it primarily as a PDA then buy the P800, otherwise avoid it. Almost every main function of the phone requires you to open the flip and use the stylus, i.e. two handed. This device is no good for those that want to use it as a phone and a PDA.

3. Lack of T9 - While this doesnt bother those people that only want to use it as a PDA, it will become a serious bother to those of us that want to use it as a phone. It takes so long to write text messages with the keypad that you have to open it up and use the stylus.. NOT good when you're on the move and want to tap in a quick SMS.

4. Media Playing ability leaves a lot to be desired - While it is technically true that it can play MP3, WAV, Video etc.. its very limited (much more limited than SPV and even my old Siemens SL45i!!). Again requiring you open up the flip and use the stylus to access your music, and even then yo u cant create playlists etc.

There are some more points that may concern some people, its size for one thing is something that you need to get used to. Its a very powerful device and is capable of a lot, it also performs well at most of the things it does. But for those that want a phone with PDA functions, dont buy it. But if you want primarily a PDA with the bonus of being a phone as well, then go for it.

Hope this is of some use to those looking at the P800. I spent a lot of money on mine and cant help but feel I made a mistake.. an expensive mistake. I dont want that to happen to others as well!

Cheers,

LordDante

Cheers LordDante, nice to have some fair opinion on these things.

The old my Amiga's better then your ST argument flamed on a while back, but i think we all have to let it boil down to two very different devices that just happen to both make phone calls... occassionally ;)

Yeah agreed. I think those arguments about whos is better are just getting so old now, and they have no use but to annoy. I dont think the SPV is any better or any worse than the P800 because they are in a different league.. aimed at different kinds of users. The P800 is for those that are more interested in a PDA with the added bonus of the odd phone call. The SPV is more aimed at those that want a phone, with the added functionality of a PDA. I dont own an SPV so I cant comment too much on it, but I do own a P800.. and to be honest I think the SPV would suit me much better.

As for the Nokia side of things, well dont get me started :) All I will say is that Nokia are aiming their smartphones primarily at the younger more fashion concious type of people, the SPV on the hand isnt. Personally I dont like Nokias, never have and never will, but thats my opinion. I think Nokias do have their merits, but so does every phone so there is no better phone. Its what suits you as a person that decides which is better.

Anyway, I'm tired now ;)

Good points. A mate of mine called me last night asking advice as he's after a P800. He's tried it out and he liked it but I'm not sure what he's doing about it yet. I've directed him to this thread though so he can weigh up the pros and cons himself.

Thanks LordDante!!!

:) am now with spv :D

snif, snif. now i feel like i belong.

thought i would get straight down to business and get my GPRS up and running! first i was told i would have to wait until my next billing date until they powered it up (24 may). then, a little G appeared in the corner of the display, and suprise, it was working! phoned 156 to find out what was going on and it turns out they had automatically put me onto pay as you go type gprs, £3 a mb!!!! i was then told that i would be put on unlimited GPRS promosion pack until the next billing date, but then he couldnt do it cos it was finished.... so he put me on 4mb access, but it wouldnt work until tomorrow, but hey presto! it still works!

sorry if this doesnt make any sense, its probably because it doesnt... ;)

only thing i do know is that come my next bill, there is going to be some massive GPRS bill... :?

great phone though. have been smiling all day.

I'm still hoping someone will be able to quietly activate the unlimited pack for me... I'll try tomorrow.

Is this just me - or does the screen seem to reflect itself? My screen is ever so slightly beveled, and when viewed straight on with a dark background you can clearly see the reflection of the edges of the backlight going in at an angle. Pretty disctracting, anyone else have this?

Also, does anyone know if Media Player can play full screen?

like i said, i think unlimited GPRS is off. the guy i spoke to actually tried to connect me to it but he couldnt. he hadnt realised it had ended but he was obviously barred when he got to the relevent point. ;)

No it's not possible, but then again why use Media Player when there are

the excellent Pocket MVP and Pocket TV apps around that can do full

screen and far better quality ;)

Yes, I've only had the phone for two days and I'm still getting to grips with what the best apps are etc. I understand SP Task Manager is a must which I'm about to put on - anything else? What do I need to edit the registry?

Has anyone observed the screen peculiarities I mentioned above? I'm 50/50 about taking it back to the shop to ask for a replacement based on this.

i do notice a reflection if you tilt the screen vertically up and down when you look at it. doesnt really matter, unless you intend to look at the creen at a weird angle. not quite sure what you mean by beveled screen. are you refering to the fact that the srceen is slightly larger than the see-through bit of the plastic above it (hence having to look at a crooked angle to see corner pixels)?

just found my first episode of south park! wow! still smiling. nice how technology can make one so happy... sad though i suppose.... ;)

anyone know of a site with simpsons episodes?

Brody convinced me so i went to orange thursday and got the wonder that is the SPV, only prob was promo stopped for GPRS, nevermind still have great deal

"bevelled screen" was referring just to the external clear plastic bit - it is ever so slightly curved, having the unfortunate effect of acting like a lens. On my phone, when you look at it straight on as you would for normal use, there are quite noticeable diffraction effects (from the backlight) that spoil the display underneath. It is entirely optical interference, worst on dark backgrounds (such as in the first menu in Orange Backup). When viewed from 45 degrees above or below the interference is mostly gone, but it is not at all natural or intuitive to hold the phone like this all the time.

I took it back to the shop today and compared it with the demo one they had - theirs was noticeably better. However, the woman I spoke to didn't seem to understand what I was meaning, and claimed not see what I could see standing right next to her. "Without a fault code" or some nonsense she was unable to offer a replacement, but I'll be damned if I have to look at this for the next 12 months. Looks like I'll have to phone 150, but why do I get the feeling they will tell me to go back to the shop... :|

Bevelled screen is normal it's part of the design, also the phone is

only designed to be viewed straight on , some members have guessed at

it being designed for privacy so only you can see the screen.

Good news for those already on an Orange contract. I was an SPV user on day one but ... now don't flame me .. I sold out due to problems etc. I know should have stuck at it .. well I have now seen the light and I am returning to the SPV fold. (If anyone wants the gory details of the devices I used in the wildernes smonths ... post and I will enlighted) Anyway .. back to the plot.

I phoned Orange this morning to request an upgrade on the back of another 12 month contract with orange that was now due an upgrade. I was expecting to pay the £69.95-£79.95 upgrade cost .. but to my surprise the upgrade was £0.00 .. yup ZERO .. and no need to upgrade the tarrif. ( Iwill of course have to review re GPRS etc .. but that can wait)

Just 2-3 working days to wait and I will have a shiney new SPV again (This time I'll be keeping it ;) )
