Guest Chris Edwards Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 malloc, how much slower is OGG processing compared to MP3 using Pocket MVP for smartphone? Any idea? If it's not that much slower, than I'll have to use ogg audio instead (OGM)... i find that it's quite a bit better than mp3 at lower bitrates.

I don't really know  I have not yet been able to play an OGG with PocketMvp, I'm not even sure it works on the pocketPC version (I'm porting the pocketPC version without ever having seen it run on a pocketPC  ) But I'll try to make it work 'cause I'd really like to dump wmp  malloc
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 @simon : About the Tanager, I know someone who has one, and uses PocketMVP without any trouble. But it might be a IPSM issue (like PocketTV), have you tried to install it on the SDCard instead of the phone memory ? Thanks Malloc! It's all sorted now (see earlier post) so I'm very happy again ;) There was something messed up with my installation in the registry, which meant whatever version I tried, or how many times I re-installed it was not working. I took Madu's advice and deleted the key in the registry, and re-installed it, and it's now working fine. Just to put into perspective how great I think Pocket Divx is, I was going to use my SPV instead of my Tanager until I could get it working :!: Once again A Big Thank you :!:
Guest Chris Edwards Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 I'm not even sure it works on the pocketPC version (I'm porting the pocketPC version without ever having seen it run on a pocketPC  ) I can assure you that it works fine on a Pocket PC. I had a few OGM clips encoded for Pocket PC that played fine on my e740. Have you talked to Marc Dukette at all?

Have you talked to Marc Dukette at all? That's what I thought ;) There's definitly an error in the port of those DLLs... I did talk a bit to Marc when I was doing the first port (Alpha04), but did not since... I'll re-contact him as soon as I have everything sorted out, and a clean version  malloc
Guest malloc Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 @ Keystroke : Have you tried to press 7 a second time ? (Actualy pressing one time, waiting to see if the light goes off, then pressing another timer 7). There's a small bug, some time it doesn't set the backlight correctly... Oh... another bug I'll have to check  malloc
Guest madu Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Malloc, just found this opensource codec stuff... It plays loads of formats.. I have no clue about these things, but if this is of any help, follow the links here: http://forums.projectmayo.com/viewtopic.ph...c=6244&forum=23 which leads to homepage: http://www.matroska.org/
Guest malloc Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Hum... it looks cool, but it's only a container (like the .AVI file format), it's does not actualy decode any compression format  But it could be used to encapsulate a divx video with two mp3 audio tracks into a single file for example, and it seems to handle variable bitrate format as well (a bit like OGM). If tools become available, it might be a good alternative to the old AVI file format  malloc
Guest Marko!!!! Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Can anyone tell me where i can get more info on creating DIVX files?? ;)
Guest madu Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Can anyone tell me where i can get more info on creating DIVX files?? ;) www.DivX.com  and there's plenty in 'Articles' section of forum. What you're looking for is 'encoding video files using DivX'
Guest ziggys101 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 I have a problem when trying to play a 100Mb film in that it tries to load but I then get the error "Failed to load file, please check available memory", but I have no problems with 3Mb trailers and have over 100Mb free on my SD card. Is it the amount of space left in my phone RAM (about 3.5MB) or do I have a one off prob and need to reinstall it.
Guest malloc Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 @ziggys101 : if the file you're trying to play is using good encoding settings, then it might be the amount of free RAM in your phone (playing a big AVI file will take a bit more memory top play than a small file, due to keyframe indexing). You could try to kill all background applications using SpTaskManager, or reboot your phone... it might do the trick... malloc
Guest jim80b Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 malloc, i also have this problem i renecoded italian job (98 meg) and it wont play. my fix for now it to chop it up into smaller files. i tried killing all other processes and after a reboot.
Guest malloc Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Ok, then there's definitely a problem with big files, I'll compress a 100MB file and try to see if I can find the bug this weekend... malloc
Guest ziggys101 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 I can play files of 30-40 Mb ok, but I do have a few things installed on my phone from before I had the SD card, so Ill uninstakk them and put them on my SD card and try again. Ill let you know what happens. Cheers :?
Guest James Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 for the record i have NEVER had a problem with big files. just used task manager to free up some space or just a phone re-start The only thing i have installed on the phone is the IA Caller ID Beta.
Guest PsychoDave Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Yup same here, watched the entire matrix the other day no probs at all. I've normally got about 7 ish meg free. Jlowap: Did u used to play with DJ Shadow?? :)
Guest Thurstan Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Couple of the movies I've encoded are too big for my card - how do you 'chop em up' into smaller files?
Guest jim80b Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 you can use vdub, save as seg avi, and choose a file size or a frame limit. weird how it doesnt work for me. will try another film norm have smartface running but have tried closing that
Guest Thurstan Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Tried saving as segments in vdub, but it gave me about 100 files of about 800kb... I'm missing something aren't I?
Guest jim80b Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 hmmm... when i save as segments i get options of file size, what i did was set this at 200 meg but limit frames to a quarter of the total (found by scrolling to the end of the film and dividing the frame number by 4) i get 4 files starting 0 to 3 and they work fine hope it works for you now
Guest James Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Jlowap: Did u used to play with DJ Shadow?? :) You must have me mixed up with James Lavell! the Hip Hop DJ Very similar name don’t you think! :(
Guest ziggys101 Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Malloc:- I,ve hard reset the phone and decerted and only loaded pocketmvp and still get the memory problem. I'm sure the encoding is ok as ive choped the same file down to 35MB chunks and they work ok. Tonite I'll encode some more films and check them as well. Cheers
