Guest Chic0 Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 no, I can log onto an ordinary isp with ED50, one of the few ( only? ) tariffs where data calls come out of your inclusive minutes. This doesn't use gprs, and will be slower, but at least I will be getting use out of my free minutes. This tariff is no longer available incase you were wondering. I've been on it for about 4 years, started as ED20 but then they made it ED50, that's 50 off peak minutes everyday, upto 1550 minutes a month for £15.50. No wonder they stopped it!. Kevlar Kevlar, I'm also on ED50. Been on it for about 4 years also. Which isp do you use to access net from phone? Would be really handy to have once offer runs out. Yep, I noticed Orange had discontinued the tariff. Dont think they make too much money off it.
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Almost never use GPRS, I just don't have any use for it; another reason why my SPV's up for sale (only assuming I can get a decent price for it, of course)
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Chic0, I use GPRS atm, but have tried it with an isp, it was a few months ago and I can't remember who it was, but I checked my orange bill and the call wasn't charged. I can't remember their name, but you didn't even need to register, just log in with their name and password supplied on their website. I think it was something UK or UK something. I think it was an 0845 number. Somebody on either this forum or microsoft newsgroup put me onto them. I'll have a search around and see if I can find them again. Kevlar
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Why dont you use it? is is because you have a computer at home?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I've never really bothered with GPRS, so that's £6 a month I'll be saving :) I just can't get into using it.

Kevlar Yep O845 calls come off our minutes. If you find the details let me know. I've just heard that Breathe isp provide this service as well. Gonna find out.If they do I'll post the details.
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I just can't get into using it. Me neither - if there's anything to be downloaded it gets done via the passthrough connection anyway....after knocking-on 3 years of ADSL at home, GPRS is tooo slooow

Guest Southwestwall Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 I posted this at microsoft.public.smartphone a while ago. Please excuse the repeat, all those who saw it there... I thought it would be relevant to this topic - I played with a little arithmetic on tarrifs and data charges, which highlights just how overpriced GPRS really is - CSD runs at 9600bps = 1200Bps ~ 1.17KBps Theoretically it will download 1MB = 1024KB = 1048576B in approx 14min 34sec. Given a small amount of packet loss and return data uploaded, 16.5 to 17 minutes is more realistic [i often relied on a CSD modem connection over the last 3 years] Using my off-peak inclusive minutes on EveryDay 50, I could download upto 3MB on a good day on the network within my allocation. After my allocation, off-peak local [inc. 0845 and 0800] calls are 1p/min Hmmm, that's about 17p/MB. But the speed is SO low on CSD... Well, practical GPRS is an intermittent 30 - 40Kbps, roughly equivalent in real usage to a 33.6Kbps modem if you're lucky [wow  ], from experience and for the sake of example. 33600bps = 4200Bps ~ 4.1KBps Theoretically it will download 1MB = 1024KB = 1048576B in approx 4min 10sec. A realistic time of about 5 minutes. Which is approx 3.5 times as fast as CSD Even at £6/10MB or 60p/MB - equivalent to the bundle now, is a 12 minutes/MB time saving really worth 59p/MB ? Try justifying the price difference on data over the inclusive tarrif, at £8/MB... £7.99 to transfer 3.5 times as fast? Lately alleged to be at least £3/MB... still :?: Yeah, yeah, I know GPRS isn't time-based - but is that worth the huge premium :?: "But it is always-on and connects straight away like broadband..." According to the way current phones like the SPV drop the connection [class B device] and redial between site changes so often I'd say that's not quite true. I for one will be returning to using my inclusive call time on CSD, if Orange's current data charges don't improve drastically when the promo bundle finishes at the end of April. Regards,
