Microsoft Portrait now supports Smartphone

First off, assuming u have a webcam, and have got portrait properly installed on your phone(by manually installing the portraitsp.arm.cab)

Download, install and run PC Version of Portrait.

(set your video options to 128x96 ,5fps,keyframes 5sec and Bandwith to 4.8kbps if it'll go that low, mine's set at 14.4kbps,colour)

Audio to 'mobile 2.4kbps'

Then still on pc: goto Help/about and note down your pc's public i.p address

Leave portrait running on your pc (hint: press video and tick box to send video)

Now To the phone:

open i.e to get gprs(make sure u have idle disconnect set to >30secs), then open portrait and enter the i.p of your pc and press call.

Allways shutdown portrait using /options/exit... cos it seems to drain the proccessor time when run in background.

So far, It doesn't boot up GPRS, It doesn't send Video, and It doesn't run with messenger apart from that I like it , I like it a lot :-)

(anyone used netmeeting? this is v.v.similar, I.e it's a bit wobbly, but it's better that a kick in the nuts)

Re TIP and About screen: It will show 127.0.0.1 if you are not connected via either GPRS or ActiveSync

Managed to connect between two smartphones over the air but as stated earlier, no video option. Whats more, chat option didnt work - no text was received by either phone - so basically it was a telephone call on a very noisy line :)

What started as a very promising app has turned into a useless waste of time.

So does this app actually work. i.e. do what its states?

It does nothing worth shouting about. With video enabled it would have been cool

It will be good if it can be connected to a PC succesfully, then your can talk to your kids/significant other/pet (delete where appropriate) and see them while on holiday or staying late at work. If somebody can work out how to make it work SPV 2 SPV then it will be a severe blow for 3 since they are charging 50p a min. for data connections which is £2.50 every 5 mins whereas we can get 7 mins fro £2.50...

MMM.... This is 'Research' hence, it's not fully functional, give it a while and they'll iron out the problems, and hopefully enable the camera... (they use IA's codec for ppc video send capability)... plus there's an SDK so mebbe someone can adapt it before Microsoft..

Frustrated is all i can say, Portrait doesnt seem to automatically pickup the gprs connection, and thus you cannot make a call???

Does anyone have an idiots guide to using the system????

Cheers

Bro has a good point, i wouldnt have expected anything classed as a "reasearch" project to be anything close to fully functional, "research" means they havnt even come up with a viable product yet!

You have to open an internet connection before making the call.

Just read on ppcw.net that there's a new version of Portrait available that fixes the .NET bug:

http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/

Quote from PPCW:

"Jiang informed me last night, that the .NET Messenger bug in Portrait for Smartphone is fixed now:

We've fixed the .NET sign in bug and posted a new PPC version on our web site. The version number is still 2.1 but the code is new. Please download again and try.

So if you are currently testing Microsoft Portrait with your Smartphone, you should download the 2.01 again to get this bug fixed!

Also they are currently working on the SPV camera support, right now - as I already wrote in my review the SPV camera isn't supported. "

Good to know that thye are working on it as i think that this could be an amazing app.

Or maybe not....

Just tried it and cant get .NET to work - still just a slow/expensive voice call then :(

As i said though - it's good that they are taking an interest in the SmartPhone platform and developing it further. :)

Lets just hope that these updates keep coming!

Mine works now I've got the lastest one.(you're using explorer not messenger, to strike up the gprs?)..

Mine signs in and displays contacts list ... and you can use it to dial either way.... i.e dial IN, as well as OUT....

I dunno if this is just me but when a call is initiated(?) from broadband pc side, the quality of the video on the phone seems smooth as ya like for .
