This my be a stupid question, but do you ever use win98/2000 now you have winXP? I can't see the point in it, unless you have some bizzar old software which doesn't work in XP.
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 and (sorry for all the questions) my ATA 100 drive is 7200rpm and the ATA133 is 5400rpm---if i want to run raid--what will be faster 2 drives at ATA133 5400rpm or 2 drives at ATA100 7200rpm??? I've been looking online, there's not that many 5400rpm drives avalible. The only one I could fins was... 250Gb Maxtor ATA-133 (5400rpm, 2Mb Cache) £257.32 But for a tenner more.... 250Gb Maxtor MaXline Plus II ATA-133 (7200rpm, 8Mb Cache) £269.08 When I was setting up my system I was recommended to got for a 7200rpm ATA100 over a 5400rpm ATA133 setup (by a techie friend), apparently the increase in rev's will give better performance that the extra 33.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 Especially with WinXP compatability mode... (nice pics btw, cheers :))

But XP is in over 99% of the time.
Guest meaks Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I'm looking to get a total new pc system including a tft monitor. Anyone recommend a decent company to buy it from?
Guest MECX Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 cheers for the link. Check out..... http://www.scan.co.uk/shops/highpoint.htm its just that i fancy this raid thing and i have a 40GIG ATA100 7200 and a 30GIG ATA133 -------might as well get a ATA100 40gig 7200 drive then. the raid cards are cheaper as well. (the 5400rpm drive is 30gig and is a maxtor fireblade 3--dont know if they sell them no more)
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 yeh - i'd stick with the 40Gb one. Try and get the same model as you're current one. RAID may not work if they're differant. Ideally they should be from the same batch, but you can RAID most things together it'll just run at the slower speed and smaller size.
Guest MECX Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 oooh i looked at your pics for the case and i want one now!!! i should ban myself from here its getting expensive. im not gonna be able to get them from the same batch but i want two of the same drives---will see what i can find---the other drive came with my computer and is a western digital 7200rpm one as far as i can tell. (just found out my house in lenton nottingham has been broken into--took my flatmates laptop---BASTARDS  )
Guest JabbaTheSlut Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 jabba---shame about that 9600.. sounds faulty---your AGP doesnt have a little yellow sticker on it does it?? mine does and was wondering if you had to pull it off for different AGP settings>>>? no yellow sticker, i've done a bios update, and conceded to it being dead, well-at least dabs got 50% of the order to me in good condition!!! and the tft was the most important thing!! heres what my PC looks like, and yes, thats the sad 9600 sitting there :) and yes, i know it needs a tidy in terms of cables!!!!!!New Picture.jpg
