Guest Bazz
I'd say that traditionally an answerphone was a seperate box which sat beside your phone (or was built in), while voicemail was a service provided by your network or phone system (e.g. at work). An answerphone would answer your phone if you didn't, while a voicemail was like a mailbox (with forwarding and reply options) which could be used even if you're on the phone. They are pretty much synonymous now, but we still use Answerphone more here in the UK.
