Mitac Mio 8380 coming to Europe

So we've got them yesterday! The keyboard is English only. And they came with only English language available. Two CDs in the package one with MS Outlook 2000 and Active Sync, the other with apps from Mitac:

PhoneBackUP, PhoneCity, PhoneReader, MetalStrike, PhoneRing. Most striking difference from Orange SPV - how it works with camera. The difference is so big that after playing with different controls available in Mio, I've got a feeling that SPV do not have any camera at all! By the way maximum resolution of Mio camera is only 320x240.

Mio 8380 is App Locked from the factory. Mitac promised that in a short time tools will be available to upgradeMio with unlocked version of OS. The OS upgrade process is easy and works without any problem with standard hardware which came with Mio 8380.

Does anyone know if the Mitac Mio is using an Xscale processor ?

Are there other announced Smartphones that will be using Xscale ?

yup, 200mhz xscale, and i reckon by year end that will be standard

Cool :)

Just too bad that there is no way to detect whether the processor is an ARM or an Xscale on Smartphones (you can on Pocket PC's, but not on Smartphones)... Yes, MS is aware of the problem, but they have no solution (yet).

So basically, if your application can use Xscale-specific optimized code, it has to check the device type with SystemParametersInfo(SPI_GETOEMINFO,...) and hardcode, for each known device, whether they have an Xscale processor or not.

What a pain!

Going to the about screen on my mio 8380, it says the processor is an Intel PXA255.

"About"probably displays an incorrect processor type.

The problem is that this "About" screen relies on the API KernelIoControl(IOCTL_PROCESSOR_INFORMATION, ...) to obtain the processor information.

Unfortunately this API must be implemented by the OEM, and very often we have observed that the OEM returns incorrect strings, or no processor information at all (since the implementation of this API is optional).

IMHO, MS should provide an non-privileged API to get the processor type (or rather, the ARM processor-ID) that is built-in the OS, and does not rely on some OEM implementation.

The only reliable way to determine the processor type is to run the following privileged instruction that returns the processor ID:

; Read ID Reg in coprocessor #15, requires Priviledged mode

mrc p15, 0, r0, c0, c0, 0

The processor ID contains detailed (and accurate!) information about the processor type, revision level, manufacturer etc.

Unfortunately this is a privileged instruction that require to be in kernel-mode, which is not the case for applications running on the Smartphone.

On Pocket PC's, this instruction can be used, because application all run in kernel mode, so Pocket PC applications can determine accurately and reliably the processor type. Unfortunately that's not the case on Smartphone.

Victor, would it be possible to order a handset from you to be shipped to the UK?

We have conflicting information about the way the Mio is locked. some people say that it can only run applications that have been signed with a specific Mio8380 certificate.

Can you install "signed" Smartphone applications ?

If you can, please install the trial version of PocketTV Enterprise Edition from http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail....teid=279&id=115 and tell us if you can install and run it.

Thanks!

The trial version will not install on the Mio8380. You sure the trial is signed? I could install most other smartphone.net demos I tried.

Interesting...

Yes, it is signed.

Did you try to install it on an SD card ? (maybe there was not enough available space in the phone ?).

What is the error message ?

Yep, I tried to install it on a Sandisk SD/MMC 64 meg. Any files I can check to show what certs are valid on the phone? Feel free to email me at bradhawthorne.net and I can work with you on testing it.

I'd love to have the answer to this question.

I know how you can check that a CAB file and an .exe or .dll file are signed: On the PC, select the file, right-click and select "properties" in the pop-up, then "Digital Signatures" tab.

The CAB file that you attempet to install should be called "PocketTV_Pro.SIGNED_SMARTPHONE_ARM.CAB" and located in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft ActiveSyncPocketTV_Pro" on your PC.

You can check the signature.

We use a Smartphone certificate issued by GeoTrust. It says:

CN = GeoTrust Windows Powered Mobile Device CA 2

OU = Compatible with Microsoft Windows Powered Mobile Devices

O = GeoTrust Inc.

C = US

This certificate allows installing the application on locked SPV's.

Mitac bundled a few apps with the phone. Here are the details for the certs for that cab:

CN = VeriSign Authorized Code Signing CA for Microsoft

OU = Compatible with Microsoft Windows Powered Mobile Devices

O = VeriSign, Inc.

C = US

I just picked out a few demos to install from smartphone.net. The OmniGSoft Mini-Jetfighter Demo works. It has the cert:

CN = GeoTrust Windows Powered Mobile Device CA 2

OU = Compatible with Microsoft Windows Powered Mobile Devices

O = GeoTrust Inc.

C = US

Also installed AIM Smart Strippoker Demo:

CN = GeoTrust Windows Powered Mobile Device CA 2

OU = Compatible with Microsoft Windows Powered Mobile Devices

O = GeoTrust Inc.

C = US

Those look just like the cert you have. Don't know why it recognises those certs but not yours.

Hrrrm, just tried that. I put it in the IPSMWindowsStart MenuAccessories directory and ran the cab from the phone and that didn't work either. I'm at a loss as to why it's not working. Mitac technical support refered me to email [email protected] about digital signing problems. He apparently is an engineer for Mitac. You might send him an email to see why it's not working.

Yes, obviously,

-either a standard Geotrust smartphone certificate is not sufficient to run on the Mio

or

-the Mio uses the new Smartphone 2003 software and there is a bug in the installer that prevents *some* signed applications from installing

I emailed the Mitac person you mentionned, let's hope he will be able to help. I hope someone at MS is reading this thread, too...

I've tried Pocket TV Pro on unlocked Mio 8380 - everything worked without a problem

I'm dying to get my hands on this.

Is it possible to order from Orange HK (to deliver to the UK) or will some kind soul based in Hong Kong arrange to buy a couple for us eager international customers?

Thanks for the report. Of course, there should be no problem if the phone is unlocked. But PocketTV Pro is signed, so it is supposed to work also on "locked" phones.
