Can anyone convert a MAX file for me?

i think this tool will alow MAX users to view VIZ stuff:-

This utility will provide users of both Autodesk VIZ 4 and 3ds max 5.x file and feature compatibility between these products. Some features will work exactly as they do in VIZ and other features work with certain limitations indicated in the readme. This is a script that is run with an authorized copy of Autodesk VIZ 4 that copies certain VIZ files into an authorized copy of 3ds max 5 on the same computer.

Download this utility to a temporary folder and run it to extract it to a directory of your choice. Directions are in the readme.txt.

Note: This is an 'unsupported' patch and is only usable with 3ds max 5.x.

you only need to install the Trial and it will work!

It'll probally be easier for you to install the max5 trial.

That was you can check that it's outputting the data correctly and make modifications locally.
