Guest glynton Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I think it's different for mobile phones... if a user installs some malicious code that sends 1000 texts secretly, it would certainly cause a lot of problems for both user and network supplier. There's nothing that you could compare this to on a computer, especially now that most computers have always on internet
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 There is also the financial issues to consider. I'm sure Orange loved Planus for their short-lived SMS service, providing SMS sending at a fraction of the cost Orange charged...
Guest drblow Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 I think it's different for mobile phones... if a user installs some malicious code that sends 1000 texts secretly, it would certainly cause a lot of problems for both user and network supplier. There's nothing that you could compare this to on a computer, especially now that most computers have always on internet True - but at the end of the day, everybody is very aware of things like this, & adequate disclaimers from the network would leave the sole responsibility with the user. So, like I said, if you want to take the risk of installing an unsigned app, then that's your choice. If it sends 1000 texts to all your mates saying 'I always loved you secretly!' - then thats your own problem! It could then be left to the discretion of the user as to where they get software from - queue big push from Orange to endorse Modaco as the best source for SPV software which is not malicious!! :) I mean, is EVERYBODY who has used the OTA decert doing that because they REQUIRE the service for DEVELOPMENT?? Or is it possible that a few people have used it simply to unlock their phones to the world of difference that is made by unlocking?? Even the fact that apps are developed which clearly state 'to be used on an unlocked phone', shows that the development world is also aware that alot of users have unlocked the phone anyway. Know what I mean?? Just seems a bit silly to keep the certification issue going, when Orange themselves offer the unlocking service OTA, & let's face it, they don't go to any great lengths to ensure that ONLY developers get to use it! & people are also free to install other ROMs which don't have certification lock - to which Orange will respond 'well, that's not our problem, it's not our ROM' if anything goes wrong with it!
Guest midnight Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 but, because O say its for developers only and you choose to unlocmk while not being a developer ensures that Orange cannot be held responsible for any action the user takes. The app lock method ensures that the application you are running is free from any risk whatsoever, its actually a very good thing, but badly implemented. My suggestion would be some kind of free signing method for freeware apps and games, and pehaps a pricing model along side that depending on the price of your app/game, and allow developers to pay on a 1 app basis rather than the 100 signings or whatever. Not only would this make it affordable, it may even strive to keep the costs of apps and games down.
Guest midnight Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 also, if a malicious app started doing some clever gprs stuff (downloadings gigs worth of junk and deleteing it again so it doesnt fill the phone), and you got stung with a £500 phone bill, would you be willing to pay? it was your fault cos your phone got a virus, but would that stop you from phoning O and saying you didnt download that amount? of course not, this way O dont have these problems, theres a virus for the P800 that does just that apparently
Guest morpheus2702 Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Are other platforms - Symbian, PPC Phone edition, Palm etc all similarly locked on all networks?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Not as far as i know, but bar the XDA do other OS's have the capability for application locking?
Guest mr Posted December 12, 2003 Report Posted December 12, 2003 Guys, does that press release imply that O2 are launching the devices in Asia, rather than the UK? That's how I read it.
Guest PT-1 Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Did O2 do their homework....?(Copyright or Trademark) www.xphone.de That's a very nifty CTI Software...
