Guest Matt Kirby Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 If it is just a wireless access point just connect it to the desktop PC with a network patch cable (assuming that the desktop has a network card), and keep using your existing ADSL modem. The laptop can then connect wirelessly to the desktop, and use it's ADSL connection via ICS. If you have a combined ADSL router and wireless access point, connect it to your PC as before and the phone line, you will no longer need your existing modem. The access point will act as your internet gateway and you won't need to use ICS.
Guest Gorskar Posted January 4, 2004 Report Posted January 4, 2004 Hopefully this makes sense. Option 1 is cheapest, but gives you no expandability Option 2 adds in expanability to provide wireless connections to other computers Option 3 is best, as you dont need to have a computer on to access the internet, but will cost you a wee bit more. In this case you are replacing the USB modem entirely.adsl_example.GIF

Guest pisquee Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 Can confirm that the Alcatel Speedtouch (as supplied by Freeserve) works fine at my sister's house sharing boradband between 4 desktops and two laptops (and my SPV e200 - over bluetooth from the laptop), using ICS on Windows XP Pro. Standard USB modem, no router. All over Cat 5 network, rather than wireless (with exeption of the bluetooth link for the SPV)
