Guest Microsoft Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 They who have this problem; Do this happens with games who have music?
Guest sparkisgti Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 i still say its down to your files yr playing.. as its only happened on one mp3 file i have and fine on anything else i play.. clearly showing its not hardware.. maybe the way the codec handles certain sound levels
Guest Djarid Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 been following this thread off and on... I am fortunate, I don't have the problem (although I just got my first dust, time for the Dyson ^_^ ) I have various WMAs and MP3s on the phone the MP3s are all encoded at 192 (I can't be bothered to change them) the WMAs are variously at 128, 64 and even one at 32!!! and I have absolutely not issues with them at all. The only complaint I have is the stutter when the backlight comes on on track change This may seem a gloating post but I am trying to demonstrate the settings used in my audio files that do not cause the 'Tss' sound. As my audio is fine I have not tried to replicate the problem. This may help someone... even if it is only to vent your spleen at a perceived gloater! :D
Guest joelb69 Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 Right. Orange diagnostics in all there wisdom have, after 4 weeks, concluded my phone is faulty. well thanks for that orange but as my phone has now passed its 28 day warrenty they will not replace it either through the store or directly. There advice is to send it off to microsoft (wich im not going to do as i dont think they have anything to do with this) So im going to send it off to HTC to get it repaired. They were very helpful but surprisingly they have never heard of this problem. The guy on the other end sounded pretty sure they can fix it though wich is good news. If the phone does indeed have a fault they will fix it free of charge and deliver it back to you! there number is 08712230217. i will keep you all posted. When i first posted this problem i never imagined it would get this much feedback. thank you all for your replys and i will keep you posted on my c500's journey. PS TVR guy Parris i think your an idiot.
Guest svenm Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I've followed this thread with great interest, since I am experiencing the same problem with my phone. However, it may be of interest that instead of a c500 I have the U.S. AT&T Wireless version of the phone, branded as the Audiovox SMT 5600, which has the 2003SE OS and Media Player 10. Some had wondered whether a ROM upgrade or the new Media Player might fix the issue...it won't. Doesn't look like we're seeing a "bad batch" either. After noticing the problem I posted on the AT&T support forums, and although many responded that they are having no problems, some respond that they are noticing the same glitches. My phone makes the tss sound every 16-17 seconds while playing any type of file (MP3, WMA, WAV, MID, haven't tried video yet) at a variety of encoding settings. It is quite soft, most easily heard in very mellow music, like soft instrumental. The sound seems to pan across the audio field slightly, creating a bit of a stereo effect. As others have indicated, louder music with continuous high levels of music and voice tends to drown out the glitch, as it is very soft and consists of a very high-frequency white noise. Tried different headphones, no headphones (the glitch is difficult but not impossible to hear through the speaker), playing from miniSD or phone storage, alternative media players (PocketMusic, Beta Player), factory reset, just about everything previously mentioned in this thread. Someone once said something about the miniSD slowing down the OS (not that I've noticed that), so I even tried removing the miniSD altogether and playing a track from phone storage again, but that didn't help either. Tried flight mode to make sure there are no transmissions getting in the way, made sure no other apps were running, etc. Nothing works. This seems to be an inherent hardware problem, or a pervasive issue in the OS sound subsystem or the driver it uses to interface with the hardware. If it's not a hardware fault, a future ROM may fix this, but I am beginning to think that my new convergence device will not be replacing my iPod just yet. I'm following news of the Treo 650 release with some interest, though....
Guest outofthisworld Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 At last the message from svenm brings important information, media player 10 will not fix this. I am sure now that all owners have this problem, although some do not notice it! It is strange that Orange HTC are doing nothing about this.
Guest Confucious Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I am sure now that all owners have this problem, although some do not notice it! I have listened carefully and do not appear to have this problem.
Guest ddieter Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Almost a month after first reporting the problem to Orange, I received a new replacement handset. THE 'TSS' IS STILL THERE!!!!! The question is.....now what? The C500 sucks! Wish I would have waited for the Motorola MPx220. Huge buyers remorse. Unfortunately, I haven't met anyone else that has C500 to hear myself if theirs is 'TSS' free. For those of you claiming not to hear it.....I'm sorry but I just don't believe you. It is there.....listen.
Guest bosshogg Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Just thought I'd throw my two cents in here: I definitely DON'T get the tss noise when playing audio, either WMA or MP3 - I'm a musician, and I'm pretty sure I would notice it! However I DO get it when playing divx avi's through beta player. It's kind of more of an electronic sound than a tss though, kind of like a tss put through a vocoder...
Guest Confucious Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 For those of you claiming not to hear it.....I'm sorry but I just don't believe you. Â It is there.....listen. Believe it or not, but there is NO sound on mine that shouldn't be there.

Guest outofthisworld Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Ok good for your Confucious, 'Diehard' I give the best grade of the class for being the owner of a none defective SPV C500 BRAVO.
Guest Confucious Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Ok good for your Confucious, 'Diehard' I give the best grade of the class for being the owner of a none defective SPV C500 BRAVO. Thanks - a kiss of death if ever I heard one! I didn't mean to sound smug, merely to point out that the problem does NOT affect all C500s As for being a "diehard2" - I can't change that, it's what is assigned to me (I believe it changes depending on the number of posts). Only Plus members can change there title. Like I say I hope me pointing out the facrt that my phone works hasn't come across as me being a smug git - it was not meant to.
Guest outofthisworld Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Ok Confucious, I understood your point. but then again today tss , tss and tss all in my ears. ORANGE = Rotten Oranges,
Guest joelb69 Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 After a few days as promised HTC deliverd my beloved C500 back to me describing how they had fixed the "tss" bug. And with the demo file they had uploaded on to the phone there was indeed no noise! My excitement soon faded however as the first mp3 i downloaded on to the phone had the tss noise. After describing to them in detail the symptoms of the tss bug, the problem they describe reads: System hang under OS. HTC managed to "fix" the problem with a "Re-Flash ROM image" although obviously that hasnt worked, or at least it worked for them. Or maybe this was just a standard repair procedure? who knows. any way i think im just going to have to live with it.
Guest red1mp Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Ok good for your Confucious, 'Diehard' I give the best grade of the class for being the owner of a none defective SPV C500 BRAVO. Mine worked fine for the first 3 weeks then the tsss appeared, don't worry those of you that don't have it now will eventually get it, dunno what causes it but it'll appear suddeny. It's about time Orange/Microsoft sorted this out.
Guest rickyjohn Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Bosshog - gotta agree with you. As a further twist to the saga, I also get a similar sound every 15-20 secs when listening to .avi's via beta player. Maybe its not a media player problem?

Same for me, it's the phone or at least the operating system, we've been shafted, Orange must have known about this before relese
Guest svenm Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 rickyjohn, the fact that the tss is present when playing audio files through alternative media players (like PocketMusic and Beta Player) confirms that it is not a Windows Media Player problem, but something deeper and more pervasive to the whole sound subsystem. I like my Audiovox SMT5600 (the U.S. AT&T Wireless version of the c500)...it is my first smartphone and except for the tss and the fact that it is a candybar phone (I've always preferred clamshells) it has the exact mix of features that I'm looking for. Now, because of the tss, I cannot use it as an MP3 player (bugs me too much), and music is one of the "convergence" functions I'm looking for. I've decided to wait until Monday, when AT&T Wireless stores become Cingular stores as part of the ongoing merger process, at which time I will go to my local store, switch to a Cingular plan, and get the MPX220, hopefully with its previously reported volume issues fixed. The SMT5600 will become my backup phone, I guess.
Guest revolution.cx Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 Just to chime in that my SMT5600 definitely has it. Both with the Orange C500 ROM that was on there for a bit and also with the stock ROM. I've also tested with flight mode on and off and it's the same. It's really obvious when I plug the phone into a nice big stereo and crank some rock. My wife even asked what "that sound was". Grrrr.
Guest rct_uk Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 Â Mine worked fine for the first 3 weeks then the tsss appeared, don't worry those of you that don't have it now will eventually get it, dunno what causes it but it'll appear suddeny. It's about time Orange/Microsoft sorted this out. It happened suddenly on mine too, yesterday when I was watching an episode of the simpsons through Betaplayer. It's quite loud and incredibly annoying! It definitely wasn't there until now... because of this thread I've spent a lot of time listening out for it :x
Guest flywest Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Has anyone tried turning down the BASS value setting if there is one? I recently bought a new set of headphones and now I get the noise. I only hear it on the songs with more bass.
Guest EggZenBeanz Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 SPV C500: yep i got it on mp3 through media player and fatty owls episode on beta player, i hope there is a fix for it soon as it ruins what otherwise is a near perfect device.
Guest outofthisworld Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Sorry guys but... There will be no fix. IT IS A HARDWARE PROBLEM! Posted from my SmartPhone!
