Orange France release C500 Update (with WMP 10)

Just four questions, based upon my C500 is currently being used in the U.S., by me:

1. If I used a software application originally which I paid for, to SIM Unlock, "c500v2unlock" is the file name of the unlocking application; with this work for the U.S. (I am currently using my TMobile SIM card, with an UK Orange C500, perfectly)?

2. Would I be required to unlock the phone again?

3. If so, could I reuse  the original unlocking software?

4. I'm guessing if it takes the ROM update, it will obviously reformat the unit, losing the stored data, forcing me to create a completely new partnership/name of a partnership, to synchronize with my computer(s), to restore my data. Am I correct?

1. you seems to be confusing software and appliction unlocck. If your device is currently sim unlocked it will stay unlocked, however you cant unlock it after updating via imei-checl.co.uk for now

The french rom requires you unlock over the orange developers site, which you should be able to do from the us, however the sites down at the minute.

1 ) Download TyphoonNBFTool from http://www.spv-developers.com/content/TyphoonNbfTool.zip

2 ) Download the update from the URL above

3 ) Download WINRAR from http://www.RARSoft.com

4 ) Extract the update EXE from the Update Archive you just downloaded

5 ) Right Click the EXE (after installing WINRAR), and extract it to a directory - you should see a number of files, including NK.NBF.

6 ) Run TyphoonNBFTool, and open the NK.NBF File (using File-Open)

7 ) Click 'Tools-Edit Header Data' and remove the value in 'Operator' field

8 ) Click File-Save As and overwrite the existing nk.nbf file

9 ) Run the update EXE, hey presto, sorted

Just to be crystal clear about this ... point no. 9 Run the update exe - does that mean run the original RUU_1.02_OrangeFR_v4.2.2.1_Ship2.exe? Or do you run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe, contained in the folder when the original exe is extracted?

Seem to be the only one in holland giving this rom a go which is a shame as orange nl will not upgrade the rom for our dutch members , they are still 1 behind the rest of europe not only for the c500 but also on the m1000, i have installed it used the cab file from the dutch forum here and all is perfect even the mms , the application lock is also removed ;) :D and yes dutch members it has dutch in menus and t9 , go for it  :D  :D  :D

i'm still a little nervous about this, i get the feeling i'm just gonna nacker my phone. spent a long time getting everything where i want, doing what i want, i use beta player and playlist manager so i think i can live without WMP10... plus the whole application unlock thing took me a month to do the first time round... not sure if i trust the french rom not to leave it unlocked.

i already have a dutch phone set to english language which, bizarrely, seems to stop MMS from working. don't think i need any french influence to confuse things any more...

My First post!

It's not exactly rocket surgery, but I made this HTML file that you may find useful.

You can enter search strings for google and multimap before starting the GPRS connection, and it has links to some good small sites. Having rapid access to the 'I'm feeling lucky' button is ace for pub quizzes.

1) copy it to the phone

2) use file manager to open it

3) save as favourite.

You may wish to edit the Cinema listings link to check for your home town. Also worthy of a mention is mobile.yell.com - very quick and cheap directory enquiries!

Someone asked if it was worth doing.

Personal opinion - probably not if you don't use mediaplayer. The update is a doddle but it takes *ages* to put everything else back. And the lock is reenabled (if you've done the orange one not the one you pay for)

WMP10 is better, even if not using media center. It supports playlists and ffw+rew which 9 didn't.

So far I haven't seen any significant changes to the rest of it. A couple of wee things here and there but (other than WMP10) I don't think it is worth the hassle.

Then again I'm pretty clueless so I could well be wrong. :oops:

Same here, is there a Dutch ROM available which can i return to if i need to take my phone into service (dust :-( ) That's the only reason i'm not really rapid to try it, otherwise i would love to...

its a good rom to put on.. the alarm has not been updated, so still used wav or the crappy free sounds pre-installed...

the orange update and backup programs are all in french so crap (if someone can put a copy of all the uk software on teh orange folder would be excellent - or email me them at [email protected])

media player is great, the playback of videos are much much smoother, but if the screen size of the file is still too big, it wont strech to fill the screen yet ;)

orange unlock utility that they make to app unlock your phone works like a treat

if you are going to install this update, make sure you write a list of all the programs you have installed, backup your start menu (so you dont have to reorganise), and put all the installtion program files into a directory so you can reinsatll all really quickly

its worth doing guys, i will be pretty much the same phone as before but with wmp10, and if you make sure your pc is running ok, plenty of battery life, then just install it.. and if you screw it up, then make sure you have phone insurance and drop it in your loo (<-- highest claim reason for mobile phones!!) altho, of course all on this site would not do that, as it is fraud and very naughty.... so its hyperthetical really.....

As more people are successfully updating their phone I'm slowly coming round to applying the update but 2 quick questions...

1. Do you reckon a backup program like Sprite Backup could be used to restore all your original settings over the top of the new French ROM? AFAIK Sprite Backup saves all the software, settings, contacts, ringtones etc...

2. Just want to be sure... if I unlocked my phone using the Orange developers site I will still be able to go back to the Orange UK update? Would I need to change its version number or will it just run?

extract files from the kit. open nk.nbf with TyphoonNbfTool. In TyphoonNbfTool: tools->edit header data.. delete operator field. save the file.. and run ROMUpdateUtility.exe

how should i extract files? I first extracted files from the archive and there is a .exe and .pdf i know that the file u r saying is in the .exe file but i do not manage 2 extract the files from it .

No one seems to have asked the question - Can you Sync WMP10 files over BT with this version?

With the old version you had to use USB which is a pain. If you can then it ould be worth me doing the uppgrade (if I get my phone repaired!)

i have winrar 3.40.. open winrar.exe, go to RUU_1.02_OrangeFR_v4.2.2.1_Ship2.exe, right click on it (from winrar) and click "extract to the specified folder"..

Did that already but it only extract the file itself .exe no other files i will try 2 dl winrar 3.40 mayb that's the problem.

i installed it on a DANISH C500 - and followed the walkthrough above. It works like a charm . it took maybe 5 minutes all in all - and i've got the new mediaplayer and so on - it also seems as if the menus are a bit faster now ? .. ?

So long as you can BT ActiveSync, should work fine!

on looking at it today it does feel more responsive, and camera refresh rates a little higher.

still cant app unlock though ;)
