Guest Monolithix (MVP) Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 It is a bit rubbish i suppose, but would you really want to hold that thing to your ear....?
Guest Dr Who Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 It is a bit rubbish i suppose, but would you really want to hold that thing to your ear....? Not when I was on the street not a chance, but it would be quite handy to pick it up and use it as a phone in the office. Otherwise I can see me fumbling to find the the headset and missing the call or shouting at it like Dom Joly.
Guest Monolithix (MVP) Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 An incorporated, detatchable bt head would be cool. Charges when attached, just unclip it from the device and hit a button to take the call ;)
Guest Confucious Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Just tried removing my head as I thgink it's fully charged but it doesn't appear to be detachable - at least not without a guillotine....
Guest rickyburke Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Well its not really that much bigger than the HTC Universal, and i never use a headset with mine. I'm still waiting for the I-Mate Ultimate 7150.
Guest yarod_g14 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 WOOHHOOO! I just ordered my Amao for.......£240 as an upgrade to my out out contract pay monthly. On £20 a month and £7.50 web and Walk. It comes tomorrow morning........I had better find some h**ked GPS soft on P2P for the morning so I can play with it. ;) I will have to try all options before I purchase a copy. I heard they are over £50 for the basic packages! I know TomTom and Copilot....anyone know which will work in this device>? Anyone have any experience? I hear that its a SirfStar III chip, the T-mobile spokes person confirmed it has GPS integrated and T-mobile didnt remove this extra. I cant wait to load up my copy of Opera (which was a MODACO PLUS GIFT :D ) on this device and download some serious.....errr ......Pron? NICE! On the serious side, I spent a lot of time searching for the differences between this devices GPU (ATI W227 or something) and the new Nvidia GPU which is being incorperated into the XDA flame. I was split between the two. It appears that the XDA NVIDIA chip supports Open GL(mobile version) and the Amao ATi flavor does not. It seems from the ATI site that this chip is a Dedicated 2D processor. Not good as I was hoping to be playing Quake 3 on this baby. I am sure someone on XDA developers will be able to offer more info... I shall put up review of video and gaming possibilities tommorrow and probably a few pics.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 I had better find some h**ked GPS soft on P2P for the morning so I can play with it. Er, that's really not in keeping with our No Piracy policy. Tread carefully. TomTom and CoPilot should both work fine! P
Guest rhedgehog Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) TomTom works great. If you want to test the GPS, Map4PDA works great. GPS port is com 5. it is indeed a sirf star III chip inside so the accuracy and pick up speed is great. When I stick it in the window of the big metal cube i work in, it picks up in around 20 seconds! Not tried using it to my head yet, cos I have access to an HTC S100 at work and have been using it with that so far, which works great apart from the normal Windows Mobile bug of having to set it to hands free every time you turn it on. The HTC S100 is based on the itech r35 clip so lasts most of two days on standby and use for phone calls between charges, but you do still get a bit of distortion on the high frequencies same as on all devices with that damn microsoft bluetooth stack on them. It comes with opera already installed so no need to worry about that. Battery life so far is not so good, it runs from full to flat in around 3 hours, but then it is a new toy and has spent the day going around the office as everyone wants to see it. And besides, any PDA will go in around 3-4 hours if you are sat there using a2dp, wifi and using it constantly! even my Orbit only lasts 3 hours 40 when i use it real hard! If you're using a device hard enough to drain a hermes in 7 hours this wont give you any improvement I imagine. I'll find out what it is really like once the novelty has worn off after a day or two. When charging, the USB port can charge it fine, but if you are using it hard while plugged into a USB port, it is just about enough to stop the charge going down. You really do need to charge this beast on an AC charger. on the upside the screen is a beautiful thing to see, the sound is pretty good, and i have not noticed the bass problem present on the Trinity. the reaction of anyone in the area that is into gadgets, and even that of many who are not is sheer wonder at what it can do. No problems so far with the microdrive which seems to be stonkingly fast, especially with WM5torage installed so it shows as a USB hard drive on your PC. 500 meg file transferred in about 60 seconds. Obviously you dont want to be dropping this thing as apart from any other damage you might do, it will really screw the microdrive up. The G sensor is undeniably kitsch when used for vueflo in the browser, but still it makes me laugh and the peeps in the office seem to be transfixed when I turn it on. Overall this may not be the perfect PDA/Phone combo, but there is nowt on the market this powerful, this beautiful (a personal choice i grant you) or quite so cool IMHO. I think I'm in love! I have 5 more days to decide whether or not to send it back, but i can see me putting this thing in a jacket pocket and wearing a bluetooth headset round my neck all the time! oh, and it does have a 3.5 mm jack on it so in go my sony headphones whe using it for music! Guest Confucious Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 The HTC varient? at £645? or did you find one cheaper?

"certainly sir, there's one in the post for you with our compliments" If only it was that easy, hehe. Reality: Me: Hi, this is Paul from MoDaCo.com. I'd like to run a review on the Ameo, can you hook me up? T-Mo PR: Sorry, we don't have any. Me: Oh, OK... I notice they are now in retail... do you have any timescales? T-Mo PR: Not specifically, but i'll make sure you're on the list. Me: Anyone I can speak to T-Mo directly? T-Mo PR: No. Me: OK then... anything you can do will be appreciated. T-Mo PR: OK, i'll see what I can do. Me: Thanks. T-Mo PR: I'm sure they'll come thru at some point, however it's rather frustrating for retail to get devices before us ;) P
Guest MPXtricky Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 That's not too far off what I jokingly said earlier! You're a git and I still hate you :D If only it was that easy, hehe. Guest yarod_g14 Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 ;) Well I have had ny amaeo for a whole day now and i must sayi recon it runs at least 50% faster than my universal was. i am very impressed. the speed is really blistering TCMP runs my 450mb avi episode of hero's formatted for my pc without any problems. i hooked it up to my monitor and i was amazed, the vga out is a real treat. i have ordered a 4 in 1 16 pin to vga/component/svideo/usb adapter from expansys to replace the vga only adapter which was in the box. Then i can plug in my psp, usb mouse. tv and all sorts ! You get a little pen in the box which is normal size rollerball/stylus combo and i am finding this really handy, i can write and then operate my ppc quickly and easily. The joystick isnt so hot for games i played gfdoom which ran well but controls are a bit naff. it is great in opera though. I noticed that pocket Msn is missing from my rom. i have had one crash whilst i was running pocket artist and streaming internet radio and then opened file explorer, it was a complete lockup and i had to soft reset but i suppose thats just windows mobile for you. Prior to that i had been surfing internet for hours whilst streaming radio abf and some mp3s. I am using a copy of vbar to switch applications and i am getting reasonably reliable multi tasking for the first time on a pda. It is a bit awkward holding it in your hand as compared to my old universal and the keys dont light up ;( so its hard for me typing this in very dim light. the keys also dont feel so natural but i should be able to use a usb keyboard when i get my adpter Posted from my ameo!
Guest Confucious Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 The keys not lighting up would be a bit of a problem, the number of times I use my universal in the dark I have got used to puting my thumb over the light sensor to get it to turn on! Why on earth have they left this feature off? That and the lack of WM6 (which has Windows Live so you don't need MSN) are the only two things stopping me selling my granny to get one of these (that and the fact that both my grannies are dead - but you get my gist!)
Guest yarod_g14 Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 I just noticed the state of the grammer in my last post from last night. The keyboard really sucks its just the wrong shape when compared to the ease of use of my old universal. It feels too long but the depth is ok. One really annoying thing that is really getting me wound up is opera text boxs, if you puy cursor in a text box then opera drops its full screen mode! Every time! You have to disable full screen and then re-enable to get it back. This is bad for forum posting. I would love a fix for this. i am still after some GPS software i have virtual earth an map4Pda but they wont give me graphical representation of my location. I will aplay some quake later and post my findings
Guest Confucious Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Have you tried MS Live maps? that has GPS capability to show where you are (or google maps)
