Steff195's roms! UPDATE 22.11.2011: 23153 Normal/Lite!

LZX compression, 8 MB pagepool.

:D

Hi steff,

I was looking why my device was so slow when loading HTML pages, and why it sometime freeze during activesync (specialy when using File Explorer at the same time on device side).

I've specified use of 12 MB in Page Pool, following tutorial given at post #6 in http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-general...lling-solution/

and, gosh... it works, my device is running really faster (same apps installed at same places, same parameters for GPS, 3G, etc.). There's only one issue, as I've only added 4 more MB, device memory is at end, reduced of about 10 MB (aroud 40 MB free in program area, instead of 50 before).

As I'm not familiar with cooking, has it something to do with compression? After configuring Page Pool, is there something to do in EXEcutor 3.x to restaure LZX compression (does the process suppress it..?).

Anyway, the better behavior of the device with this mod is more valuable than few more MB (and it gives even more value to your work)... but, I'm ready to try another solution if there is one... :D

Regards, Thierry

@Pigot: :D I don't know other solution, all I know is that I played around with the PP settings in my kitchen some time ago, set it up to 4,6,8,12 and tested each version. The conclusion was that 8mb was the best for Omnia. And... I saw some other chefs chose this setting in their roms: Sector, Khuanchai...

Thanks for your kind words, but I think I'll chill for a while...

@pigot: here's what I found in one topic that might help you, written by some of the guru Omnia chefs: ;)

Here is a test i made. I pushed it over a bit to have a pagepool of 20mb!

Ram dropped of course but the speed is amazing... I suggest you dont try more than 20mb. Most probably 16mb is the ideal.

So calculation is ~ 96mb - 20mb = 84mb.

yeah, it works :D

16mb is the perfect settings, but if you can remember to close all apps not in use then 20mb is coolio.

Don't know what to say... they stopped to 8mb in the end. :D Just try different values and see what suits you best. :D

Hi steff,

I'll try different arrangement (10, 12, 16 MB) and watch how available program memory evolve... I'll let you know, asap. I guess it's un interesting matter and the mod through EXEcutor 3.05 is really easy. I 'll make all this flash-tests with basic 24623 Normal Rom (it's my reference... :D ), no exotic keyborad, no thrilling icons, etc. And, I'll just note the total mémory amount available, in each case. Let's see.

Yes, that's true... try pressing 2 times the button... the download will appear eventually. :D Just ignore those shitty ads... that's the price for using their services for free. :D

Right now I'm testing a recooked 16mb version and it seems pretty fast... but the memory dropped considerably... after all customization I have 48-49mb left... I think it's too much memory lost compared to the increased speed. Anyway, I'll play with it to test it thoroughly.

Now, concerning that Pako's executor, I noticed that people said sometimes it's not working changing the pagepool... and might mislead you. But I think you've read about it already.

Cheers! :D

Hi steff,

imho, the best ratio 'increase-speed/memory-loss' is 12 MB Page Pool. I abandonned 16 MB Page Pool, 'cause too much memory drop... I'll give an eye to 10 MB Page Pool also, but some slow-down are yet mesureable with 12 MB.

Is it possible to found 'multilanguage pack' for your Rom, as it's an option available through EXEcutor when building executable from bootload.nb0, pda.bin, customer.csc, etc.? My goal is to give a french touch to 24623... ;)

That would mean to cook the rom from scratch, because that would mean to use different language packs, and start the whole customization process all over again. And, trust me, I don't have the time/nerves/patience to restart the whole process. I don't think I could even remember all the tweaks that I made to reach this stage. Some tweaks are made in the beginning of my cooking period and I didn't change them until now (I didn't play with them anymore), I just kept adding new ones, so... I think you get the idea: as much as I want to help, that would be too much for me. Please understand. ;)

As for the pagepool, I reverted to 8mb... don't this seems best to me. I don't think it's worth spending those mb... just my personal opinion. :D

If a zest of french means going deeper than basement, I'll consider english is the best choice ;) , as I don't plan beeing a cook soon... I prefer creating icons (some samples: calc, camera, sounds, torch button, chrono, TV out setting, video, alarms, etc.)

Page Pool: I guess I'll keep 12 MB that seems a good bargain for my use.

Hi there!

First of all, I'd like to praise your ROM, it's really great :D

But, I guess I like the M2D enough that I couldn't resist to install it again, allthough I know it has a few bugs xD . but this bug is really annoying - after I installed a couple programs, the phone decided to not-show me the icons of most of them in the start menu. I'm not sure, but this might had happened after I restarted the phone one or two times; I remember the icons were all-right at the beginning. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem (except of installing the Normal version)? Please, it would REALLY make a wonder to how my start menu looks right now. (this problem also occured in an older version of the ROM that I had installed before). The case is, instead of getting nice-looking icons, I just get the white squares with a blue margin (obviously the default icon set by windows). The icons of the cooked-in programs are all all-right though.

Second question (which might be quite easier than the first one) :D : where are the pictures of the themes stored on the phone? One of them is really cool, you know.. ;D

Third thing: The keyboard from Omnia Lite, that can be found on the link which was postet by mnbob, is really fancy and I think it would be considerable to cook it into the ROM :D It's just that the ROM looks a bit incomplete or something now that it has only the one default not-really-cool-looking keyboard. The keyboard somehow doesn't really belong to the ROM. (I don't want to criticize anything, the ROM is GREAT!, I just wanna help with suggestions ;) )

Fourth thing (which might be impossible, but it's an idea nevertheless) : I came up with an idea when seeing all those great updates of the ROM (which I didn't install every time, because of being a pain in the ass for me to go through all those settings over and over again :D). So the idea would be to make and include an "upgrade app" that would, when launched, check for the latest version of the ROM and update the installed one to this version. Some kind of upgrade stuff, that microsoft made in the case where you could upgrade from Vista to Windows7. That would be pretty cool, but I guess hard to make ;)

I don't know if it could be of any help, but all icon linking are normally recorded in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start

Datas are grouped in a block such as,

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\YouTube.lnk]

"ItemPosition"=dword:0000001a

"Group"=dword:00000000

"Icon"="\\WINDOWS\\Youtube.png"

...where the last line give the path to the icon.

On my i900, I've installed Total Commander , and off course, there's no specific icon for this program in the cookedROM. So, the block in suc case, is as follow:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\Total Commander.lnk]

"Rank"=dword:ffffffe4

"Group"=dword:00000000

So... no icon key reference, and the default Total Commander icon appear in the start menu.

I've also already seen regitry references with empty icon key, such:

"Icon"=""

For making a check of this problem, I suggest you get a program as the freeware Tascal RegEdit (http://www2r.biglobe.ne.jp/~tascal/download/pocketpc/tre_e.htm), export your device registry in a file, and look for the faulted icon references, using a simple notepad on your PC...

You can also use, JWMD Icon Changer, to save your actual icon configuration in a theme, and have a look on the text file xxx.ictp. All the icon path are described in it...

'hope you'll find the solution...

1. I don't know why you don't get any on the shortcuts in start menu. If still not, you can manually add them in Resco Explorer by copying the exe of the installed file (tap and hold Copy), and then go to /Windows/Start Menu/Programs and hit "Paste Shortcut". Now repeat the process for every desired app. :D

2. I'm not sure I understood you correctly... they should be under /Windows. Browse the folder using Thumbnails mode (in Resco Explorer) and you'll see them. :(

3. I personally don't use that keyboard and I don't find it very helpful (I like Resco Keyboard 6.0. better, with all its slides and stuff)... and since I don't cook paid apps in my roms (I assume you realize why B) ), I leave this task to you... I mean you can install whatever you want afterwards... that's why I decided to keep that standard WinMo keyboard...

4. That's not possible... at least at this point. :P

has anyone managed to install a custom rom on a Samsung B7730?

Wrong section to talk about that...

Hmm .. you're right, it's probably something in the registry ..

I've looked into the registry and the situation is:

The default programs (default programs have their icons displayer correctly) have always (at least as far as I could see, didn't check all of them, but quite a lot) an Icon key in the registry, which is never (again, as far as I could see) empty. Sometimes they also have a Group key included. I can't recon though, to have seen a Rank key by those programs (I've just checked it)..

Now, maybe I didn't say it clear in the first post, but some programs that I installed have their icons displayed correctly (that's 3 of them or something like that .. not many, really). I just want to make it clear, so there won't be any confusions :D . As far as I could see (and I think I checked all of them this time :D ), all programs with faildly* displayed icons DO NOT have an Icon key in the registry, only the Rank and Group keys.

Those of the programs that I've installed manually and do have working icons, have all a Group, Icon and Rank key. The Icon key is never empty. (so for further on in this post, the Icon key will never be empty xD).

BUT some of the programs that I have installed also DO have all those 3 registry keys, but DO NOT have a working icon xD . that's what I think is making the whole thing quite confusing x|

And there's another "fun" fact. I've just installed a program, and it has a working icon, but does not have an Icon key in the registry (it has only the Group and Rank keys). I'm pretty sure though, this working icon will be gone soon, because all the other installed icons did so too. (except of those that stayed, but they all had the Icon key)

I think I've just told you everything I was able to find out about my icon-problem until now. You seem to know what you're doing, so please keep on helping ;)

Do you think M2D could had messed things up? Because the M2D version of the ROM is known to have some bugs .. and this problem occured to me on an older version of the ROM too, also didn't help if I was trying to do something with Icon Changer. Oh, by the way - the Icon Changer recognises the icons of all those programs that have the Icon key in the registry, even of those that don't have their icons in the Start Menu. It does not recognize the icons of those programs without the Icon key though. (just found that out x) )

*I think I just made that word up :D .. I wanted to say, that the programs icons fail to display ;D

(and so this icon-problem is really killing the look of my start menu xD)

2. Ok, I've found the picture, thanks man :D

3. I see your point.. :D

4. Yeah, thought so :D but it would be pretty cool, wouldn't it? ;D

When using Icon Changer some icons are not displayed in that list by default, so you'll have to "Scan for unregistered shortcuts", in Tools menu. I saw talking about this in you previous post and thought this migh help.

Here, take a look:

Dude, which one? Because I just cooked an Omnia Lite FM Radio in the latest roms. :D See the changes list from the last roms in the first post... :D

I Scaned for unregistered shortcuts, but it found only some icons that actually were displayed correctly xD . I guess it fixed whatever there was to fix, and now it doesn't find any more shortcuts..

You need another program called executor. With that you can get those files that you need for grandprix from the one ROM file (you kind of extract it with executor).

Here, I've found you a youtube guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwxUeK2R4xo
