AMOLED DOES NOT HAVE ANY BACKLIGHT. All so called backlight functions are simulated by brightness changing.

Read the picture! or show opened AMOLED screen with backlight plate. I saw (had in hands) monochrome OLED's and they don't have backlight - they don't need backlight, every pixel is an organic LED and emits own light.

ps.Assume AMOLED has backlight. Please tell me how does it improve screen visibility. How the screen regulates the amount of light going from backlight through screen. In lcd you have to polarize light, and so on.

"Now, the Omnia II does have a standard backlight in addition to the invididual pixel lighting."

But I'm left asking myself...does it really matter?

Agreed with you, the discussion was away from the subject - status led on amoled.

Now I'm expecting a software base status-led presented somewhere in i8000's amolcd, this is the point!

Cheers.

Sad to say that it does matter. As AMOLED is relatively a new technology, confusions occur (just like the one from pocketnow).

If the Omnia II does use a traditional TFT LCD (which thankfully it does not), status LED on TFT LCD is not possible at all unless you would like to have your phone glowing 24/7. As for AMOLED, the status LED stuff might be possible.

To those who are unsure between traditional TFT LCD and AMOLED, here's how to differentiate it.

1. AMOLED's black is darker than TFT LCD. The reason why you might see some light on the 'black' part is due to colour brightness leaks from the surrounding pixels.

2. AMOLED has almost limitless viewing angles and does not wash out unlike traditional TFT LCD.

3. (This is the most obvious part). AMOLED does not have backlight leakage (because there is no backlight). To test this, go to a dark room and switch on the phone with a dark background. AMOLED will have even brightness. Traditional TFT LCD will have uneven brightness (My old HTC has this problem, you can see the backlight leaking in to the screen from one corner making it slightly brighter at one side.)

Anyway, about the status LED, is it possible to do this?

Create black screensaver, with status light in one corner and set the phone not to timeout. In theory, only the illuminated part will consume but of course this is excluding the power consumption of the screen controller.

Just my 2 cents.

No it doesn't matter but i still don't understand how can you backlight something (pixel) that emits it's own light. In link (http://pocketnow.com/review/samsung-omnia-ii-i8000) is a link to amoled on wiki and there is nothing about needed backlight in AMOLED screen.

Even if the screen be turn on and black when missed calls appears, it would be a short time. Few minutes from week, so it won't shorten battery life

===edit

Animated (black/red indicator) screensaver that would only activate when missed calls / sms appear is a great idea

===edit

This is how I imagine the final aplication.

The "dot" is displayed in random places to avoid burning the pixels (it's known problem, like in plazma or CRT)

this is a great idea, and really simple too, but needs to be implemented on low level by samsung, since windows mobile handles notification led in a hardware driver way. i seriously doubt that anyone but samsung will manage to do this, and i dont think samsung really cares, judging from the awfull preinstalled ui and software that forced me to use a super clean rom.

If we could change taskbar icon, we could add another simple icon to indicate the "status" somewhere screen. Flashing such status icon (maybe just a big dot) and make it simulated like a LED dot is the idea. (Red for unanswered incoming call, Blue for BT, White for WiFi, Green for ActiveSync and so on).

Cheers for this can be implemented soon.....

i920 Verizon has an Indicator light with 4 colors (guess there could be more)

Red=charging

Green=charge full

Blue=wifi/bluetooth

Purple=message indicator

also does multiple indications at once for example if you are charging and get a message it will blink green and purple.

I read through pretty much every post and didn't recall seeing anyone post info on this light.

Only minor issue with the indicator light is when it is lit green, at night it fills the dark screen with a slight glow (only when charging and screen is off ) seems that the never blocked the LED from the screen substrate :D

kinda off topic but still about the AMOLED, this technology is supposed to be a bright even with the backlight off but it really is just like having a "backlight" on low.

I wonder if there is a way (driver wise) to boost the intensity of the oled

The backlight makes up for it though.

ok now I am rambling ;)
