Can we change default emoticons?

OK... Now I am completely baffled...

I managed to place the new framework-res.apk back into the phone (system\framework\). I rebooted the phone and it did NOT boot loop!

But to my surprise the emoticons remain the same!

I triple checked that the framework-res.apk does have the new cute emoticons...

What the hell am I doing wrong?!
