Guest tombott Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I'm thinking of getting the grey one, Argos local to me has it available for pick up from Saturday. My Pulse Mini has died, so need to get my Android fix on!
Guest Fr3Akk Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 So is there any shop that sells phone with OLED display?
Guest job1111 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Yeah so another question: ive seen alot ppl talking about rom's and updates etc etc, that it could be a problem with the screen you have TFT/OLED. So my question is which version is better TFT or OLED ? I mean will i miss much with TFT or with OLED. Anyone with experience explain plz? Sorry for being pain in the ass with my questions.
Guest K.Rens Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I bought a new San Fransisco phone from Orange last week and I was told it has an AMOLED screen, but the build number indicates it is TFT. Stupid Orange salesmen  It's still a nice phone tough :-) Edited January 5, 2011 by K.Rens
Guest stellablade Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I took a gamble and got the white one the other day and I have to say I love it. The white version with the chrome/plastic bits doesn't look right... Edited January 5, 2011 by stellablade
Guest dustofnations Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 My SF has about 4 dead pixels, Orange have been fine about replacing it. So if anyone else has a similar problem, don't be shy - go ahead and ask them. It might involve being passed around 20 different numbers and on hold for an hour though
Guest Ron=) Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 So is there any shop that sells phone with OLED display? Some very unpopular orange shops may. Otherwise, probably not.
Guest Fr3Akk Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Some very unpopular orange shops may. Otherwise, probably not. And how can I search for unpopular shop? Or who can I ask if any shop has it?
Guest fattybacon Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 And how can I search for unpopular shop? Or who can I ask if any shop has it? Look for lepers and tramps stuffed in the doorways  I guess he means small town shops in remote areas, I imagine where I live, a small town in the cold end of the North Yorks coast there would be a good chance of getting an OLED one. Maybe you can ring around the shops and ask them to read the model number off the box.
Guest Rotmann Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 very.co.uk or additionsdirect.co.uk have it for 99 Pounds including 10 Pounds top-up. Ignore the stupid pictures for the white one.
Guest dustofnations Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 (edited) Just got my replacement, cheekily despite what they said on the phone they've sent me a refurb - it is an OLED model. Annoyingly unlike the one it replaced, it is unable to connect to any Wi-Fi points (it cannot even detect all but one of them)... So I'm less than impressed. Will try a few custom FWs before getting enraged and sending it back. Edit: Yep, it _still_ doesn't connect to Wi-Fi at all or very well. My guess is that they accepted this as a return, on the basis that it couldn't connect to Wi-Fi, have just repackaged it and sent it back out again. Perhaps there are also hardware differences between the two. Even the times when it does connect to Wi-Fi the connection is exceptionally weak. Edit2: UI with FinFil ROM (i.e. HW acceleration enabled) is much much faster and smoother. I shall post my opinions of TFT vs OLED in the appropriate thread and xlink it from here, for those that are interested. Can connect to my local Wi-Fi now but with a weaker signal than my previous phone. Edit3: Yep, the phone barely holds onto the Wi-Fi connections, frequently goes to 0 strength and web-pages take ages to load. Wonder whether the newer TFT models improved the Wi-Fi or they have given me another duff phone. Edit4: So yep, going to try to return this one too. Looks like they're trying to push out a duff phone that I'm willing to bet someone returned for exactly the reason I'm going to do so... If this carries on, I'm just going to ditch it. To think I was considering getting involved in some San Fran dev efforts... Edit5: After spending another age on the phone, going between clueless people until you get to handset department - then someone technically competent comes onto the phone. The number of "is the phone on", "is wifi turned on", "is the router on" .. despite me explaining it was dropping when i got over over 3m away from the AP and that it was working fine... It was like I could have said anything, and the same responses would have been given to me. Eventually I just said "please pass me to the handsets department in UK". Then I got a feller who was obviously clued up, and was absolutely fantastic (down in Plymouth). So, there are great agents in Orange, you just need to find them ;-) Edit6: Finally gotten a fully working model, AMOLED one too. Hoorah. Edited January 10, 2011 by dustofnations

Guest m4rts Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) Just want to confirm that Orange now have the grey San Francisco in stock. Called them up and using the pay as you go upgrade offer I was able to order for £78.99 delivered. Cracking deal! First time I called, they would not give the discount. Called back and they were able to do it straight away. Just depends on who you talk to! Edited January 8, 2011 by m4rts

This morning rang again and got it for £78.99 (grey). My SIM was from an old Moto V3 (2007) and has only been used for cinema. Never topped up. It is worth a try. I am now looking for a 16Gb microsd card, screen protector, etc

Guest Kurdt Kobain Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Hi guys new member here. Bought my San Fran on Saturday over the phone from Orange for £78.99. Had to ring 4 times altogether due to problems getiing my bank card accepted but 3 of the 4 CS reps all accepted me for the discount. I'm not an Orange customer but a got a free PAYG sim card off them about 12 months ago with £5 free credit on and they accepted this. For anyone wanting to save a few quid they've got PAYG Orange sim cards in B&M and Home Bargains for 75p / 79p if you want to try your luck. Looking forward to it coming in the next day or so. Will have to figure out what to do with my old 5800 now.

Cheers :D You need to call Orange CS 0800 0792000 and if you have a PAYG SIM they will give you the discount. Keep trying if the 1st sales rep doesn't give you the discount. I was lucky to get this price on 1st attempt. HTH
Guest ChundaMars Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Maybe I'm an idiot, but where on earth do you put in the student code (15 zeroes) to get the discount? I can't find it anywhere...

Guest niki_jonsy Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Hi folks, I just wanted to ask those of you that received their phones most recently are they with AMOLED or TFT screens? I intend to buy SF and the main reason is the AMOLED screen I am not so sure if it's gonna be with TFT screen...
