Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 Or they decided that there is nothing special in KitKat worth upgrading our phone :D Who promotes new KitKat phones - DooGee and Elephone, the brands that nobody in China ever heard of. They need KitKat if they want to survive. Known brands do not care that much for new android.
Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I bet that AOSP is Jonzalvo's and this is normal thing for china forums. :) I had Huawei G300 few years back and fixed several china roms (mostly removed china apps and recovery) and posted them at modaco forum with description, links and screenshots (credits, too) Then, few days later, found "my" rom at Anzhi forum, advertised as a rom by Dakok, the great overseas developer. I was LOLing all over the sofa. :D
Guest slime00 Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Yeah, we know they copy (everything) like no others! :D (no offence, only a joke!) That Is Fire team's rom, maybe they used Jonzalvo's rom as a base, but for sure they worked on some tweaks (Sd seems to boot correctly on this one, will have to test it) Edited June 3, 2014 by slime00
Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 My Color OS is still on, alive and well :)
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Just joined the Coolpad club. :D Ordered on 13th May from Eternal Team on Aliexpress. US$178.59 (or €130.38 via PayPal) with free Singapore Post delivery. Arrived here in Ireland today - no extra charges etc. on arrival. Hopefully I'll get to play with it later. (It's actually US$169 including 5% discount at the moment: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5-inch-Coolpad-F1-WCDMA-8297w-Great-God-MTK6592-Octa-Core-Mobile-Phone-Camera-13MP-GPS/103919_1747319443.html ) Edited June 3, 2014 by dalyer
Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 Welcome Dalyer! If you missed the warning, here it is again: don't let Coolpad make the ROM update for now. Find updating option in phone settings and switch it off. Could you check that link. I can't open it
Guest goodfella123 Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 dakok http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5-inch-Coolpad-F1-WCDMA-8297w-Great-God-MTK6592-Octa-Core-Mobile-Phone-Camera-13MP-GPS/103919_1747319443.html dalyer don't know if it's any help but have a read through this (turns off rom auto-update as dakok suggested): http://www.modaco.com/topic/371968-coolpad-f1-8297w/page-33#entry2213003
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys - I have been keeping an eye on this thread and was aware of the need to prevent an auto update but thanks for the warning! And thanks goodfella123 for the excellent idiot's guide. :) I haven't even switched the phone on yet! And I'm not sure what ROM to try first - Color OS or AOSP from needrom or something else.... Decisions decisions... :D dakok - sorry about the link - the forum included the closing bracket in the URL when converting it to a link. Fixed now. Edited June 3, 2014 by dalyer
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) OK - just switched it on and I'm a bit pissed off. The display looks dodgy - shimmering noticeably and there are odd multicoloured vertical line artefacts all around the edge of the display. A bit like a vignette/frame of glitches - not dead/stuck pixels at least I don't think so.... Difficult to describe but I'll try to post a screenshot when get a chance but it looks like a dodgy display to me... :angry2: It was already configured for US English and the build number is 4.2.015.P0.140321.8297W (Custom build number 62) and there doesn't seem to be any option to disable firmware updating under About phone. I can confirm that is not what it should look like, my display is fine, no odd pixels, no multicoloured vertical lines. Don't mess about with it, open a complaint with your seller and send it back ASAP. The longer you wait the less chance you'll be offered a refund/replacement. (I hope you paid with paypal)
Guest h3dshot Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 here's the option under settings>about phone
Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 Sorry to hear about that. Did you confirm parcel reception at aliexpress? If not I think you can make a dispute there.
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) OK - very very odd. I powered off, left it charging, put my son to bed :), came back about an hour later, switched on again and now the display looks OK. Maybe it was some weirdness with first power on or low battery - although both sound odd. Panic somewhat abated for the moment. I actually contacted the seller already but maybe it's OK. I'll play with it a bit more and see how it goes. In "About phone" there is no "System update settings" option. The list starts with "Status"... Any chance it only appears when Wifi is configured or a SIM or sdcard is installed or something? I'm not going to try that yet as I'm paranoid about an update happening automatically and ending up in the "no root" situation. Anybody else not have the "System update settings" option? I think somebody mentioned also not having it earlier but maybe that was on some custom ROM or after an update or something? Edited June 3, 2014 by dalyer
Guest h3dshot Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 now that I think about it, even if you didn't pay with PayPal you should be able to raise a dispute with your bank

Personally I would still contact your seller and let them know there's an issue. at least that way there's a log of you raising the complaint, should it return in future
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Edited my original post above. I actually did contact ET via AliExpress already just in case. I did pay with PayPal and AliExpress have some sort of dispute process if it comes to that. I haven't confirmed successful receipt of the phone on AliExpress yet. Thanks for the various posts above. At least I don't feel all alone! :D Still don't know how to ensure that I don't get an OTA update and lose root when there is no option to disable auto updates.... Edited June 3, 2014 by dalyer
Guest dakok Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 You probably have root and google apps, now find the cwm recovery.img file and install Mobileuncle tool. Put recovery on your SD card and install it thru MobileUncle Tool. Make a backup of your rom in CWM. Then you don't have to care about root :) Glad to hear that your screen got well :D
Guest dalyer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Thanks. Play Store is present so presumably other/all Gapps are also there. Yes - most or all Gapps present and correct. Haven't tried to check for root yet. There's some Chinese recovery installed - can't read much of it but it mentions "bbs.ydss.cn" in the logo and text. I know I most likely need the English CWM (presumably the one from Needrom will do). I'll follow your advice above when I get a chance and see how I get on. But I have to park it for the moment and stick with my Haier W910 for the next few days at least. Thanks again. Edit: somehow managed to boot into "safe mode" there! Think I inadvertently had my finger on the menu (?) capacitive button on the left had side below the display while it was booting. Edit again: just noticed that I have a "Kinguser" app which is mentioned earlier in the thread and seems to be some sort of root manager app so I guess you may be correct in hypothesizing that I already have root. :D Edited June 3, 2014 by dalyer
Guest Maringer Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 Regarding the lack of OTA update prompt (which I never saw myself), it seems sensible that this might not appear if there is no data connection via wifi or 3G!As dakok suggests, I'd install CWM straight away and create a nandroid backup so you can always recover root.Personally, I'm using emjot's v0.3 MIUI rom at the moment and it seems pretty good. Not sure if the dual-SIM works in this or not as I've only got one active SIM at present.Enjoy the (ridiculously good value) phone!
Guest slime00 Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 Jonzalvo released his 2.0 version of AOSP: he borrowed the memories from the chinese one I posted before and fixed his pure, he also updated libs and kernel! Download here: http://d-h.st/ZGq Plus, I managed to extract, file to file, that mtktweak app for 6592. This app is very popular in China roms, it seems able to change the clock of our cpu, and also ram usage to save battery consumption. but it's in chinese. If there is someone able to understand and translate this, i could upload the flashable zip I made!

Download here: http://d-h.st/ZGq I presume that you are referring to this AOSP Pure ROM? http://www.needrom.com/mobile/coolpad-f1-8297w-pure-aosp/ http://www.movilesdualsim.com/tema/rom-zopo-998-pureaosp.64664/ Is this considered to be better than and to supersede the other AOSP ROM from Jonzalvo? http://www.needrom.com/mobile/coolpad-f1-8297w-aosp/ (Apologies if this is answered in the moviledualsim threads about the respective ROMs but I haven't had a chance to read them all yet and some of the Chrome/Google translations from Spanish to English are difficult to understand - not as bad as Chinese to English though! :D) I'm getting to the stage that I'm starting to agonize over which ROM to choose/run. :D Edited June 4, 2014 by dalyer
Guest slime00 Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 I'm referring to the Pure AOSP, the first you linked, version 2.0 http://www.needrom.com/mobile/coolpad-f1-8297w-pure-aosp/ It's better from the other AOSP and now has also correct memories and libs updated... I think it's the best Rom right now, light and snappy!
Guest dakok Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 Does it still has that thing that you brick the phone if formatting the SD card from the phone? Like other Jonzalvo ROMs?
Guest slime00 Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 no, the most important thing about this update is the fix of all memory links, now the phone sees both internal and external memory when connected to PC.

The needrom entry for Jonzalvo's Pure AOSP v2.0 doesn't explicitly state that the sd format bricking is fixed. Maybe the moviledualsim forum thread does?
